My good brasher walking boots were getting quite slippy as the sole were almost worn through.
I couldn’t afford £100+ for a new pair so I decided to drop into the local shoe repair shop
€20 for new soles and heels and a good clean up and they are like a new pair of boots
I normally just dropped into the shoe menders to get a key cut but the service I got here was great
and a good place for a chat also with a couple of local characters
So this is just a plug for our almost forgotten about shoe repair men
Why don’t you ask him can you document his work? sit there for a few hours and photograph the technique, and the customers and the chat.
Even offer to give him a book of photos, black and white should work nice, for this old school stuff.
There was someone on PI before, a student, who went into some of the surviving family run shops in Dublin and took pictures of the staff/shops and chatted with them. He made a great project out of it.
But its much easier to do when you are a cheeky young student. I want to document my local ramen shop, someday I might ask…
I have been thinking of something along those lines now for quite a while Martin
A couple of different types of trades that are dying away
the next time I am in there I will have a chat to him about it
