Looking to buy 2nd lens

Hi.. My name is Paula and im new to photography and recently bought a basic canon 1000d, with the 18-55mm lens. Im looking to buy another good all round lens that wont break the bank. I have been looking into the 75-300mm lens and 18-200mm lens. I wouldnt really be into lanscape photography as I love to take portraits, but I would also like a lens that you could easily take on holiday without too much hassle. Also have you any views on Sigma and Tamron lenses?? Do I need more than 1 lens?? Any advice would be greatly appriciated.
brendancullenParticipantHi Paula,
I would think you’re on a tight budget – so I’ll make 2 recommendations accordingly.
Remember that you multiply the lens focal length by 1.6x to get the correct focal length for your camera…so a 50mm will become a 80mm for you. Your sensor is a APs-C
The lens you own will do landscapes pretty well using a tripod and correct settings, so there is no point duplicating the focal lengths on a new lens….unless you spend big bucks.
The first cheap one I’d HIGHLY recommend for portraits is the ‘nifty fifty’ – the CANON EF 50mm MK f1.8 II. On eBay this will cost you approx £65 brand new delivered – and for that money – the optical quality is superb. The f/1.8 can blur out backgrounds to make great portraits. The only disadvantage is that you will have to focus with your feet….as it’s a ‘prime’ lens. But it will hopefully teach you to compose your shots better.

If you want a zoom lens – I’d not get either of the ones you mentioned. I read ‘PhotoPlus’ magazine ( dedicated for Canon users) every month – and they recommend highly the http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/592701/art/canon/ef-s-55-250mm-f-4-5-6-is.html

Hope this helps in your choice.

I already subscribe to the ‘PhotoPlus’ magazine so im getting trying to get to grips with all the camera “lingo”. I think the best thing is to keep practising and then upgrade when I hopefully improve.
Thanks Again
Paula
macoParticipant50 mm is a good additional lens, I have the 1.4, it’s fast lens and good in low light shooting . .
pdillonMemberHi Maco
I have bought one this afternoon and cant wait to have a go with it. I know its a probably a silly question but do i need a filter on the 50mm lens?? I was also going to get the Canon Speedlite 430ex.. (cant afford the next one up) is that a good one to go with. Sorry for all the questions but im just learning.
Cheers
PaulabrendancullenParticipantHi again Paula.
No need for a filter on the 50mm – except maybe a polariser. You can get a cheap HOYA on ebay. Its a 52mm thread.
The glass is way back from the front thread – so a UV protector is not neccessary.
I bought the 430ex II at xmas – and its top class. worth every penny if you learn the various fuctions ( slow synch, 2nd curtain etc).
ciao
