Hi Noel – and welcome to the site.

I’m pretty new too – and have similiar equipment (450D) with another lens or too.

I’d be very happy with the first of these images. The bottom one is obviously underexposed in the foregroud – and the middle is overexposed for the sky. Common problems with varying light conditions – and the camera on its own will rarely (in my opinion) get scenes/light like this right in one exposure.

    My advise would be~

Get a Graduated filter or polariser if you want to get it right in a single shot.
Take two shots – with an exposure for the sky – and another for the foreground – and blend in Photoshop.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS take in RAW format. Photoshop is fantastic for recovering under exposed areas.

The gear you have is just fine for now – and you can take fantastic shots with a 400D and a kit lens.

I’d recommend two magazines – and read from cover to cover every month, do the expiriments and tutorials and your knowledge will increase at a rapid rate. “Digital SLR Photography” and “Practical Photography”. There are many others – but i think these are heads above the others. YouTube has awesome tutorials. Just do a keyword search. eg. 400D AV mode

Also read the 400D manual – and get to know every control and menu setting like its second nature. You will take much better images if you can quickly adapt.

Three essenstial purchases for sharp landscapes are a Polariser filter, a TriPod and a remote shutter release.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Noel,

A nice set of images here for your first post.

#1 is a very nice image and a very good idea which I have attempted a number of times myself.
I think maybe the grasses should be a little sharper but I wouldn’t be 100% sure I’m right.

#2 is potentially a good photograph and well spotted.
The sky is quite washed out with very little detail but strangely, to me anyway, the main subject area looks
    a little washed out too.
The sky is normally a good bit brighter than the land and when you include it in the frame you can get
results that look a little odd like an overexposed sky and underexposed foreground.
There are ways to deal with this.
As Bren suggested you can use a ND graduated filter to hold back the sky area or you can use photoshop
or other software to process the image.
You will get used to all this techniques as you progress.

#3 is a lovely image and the light on the mountains and reflected in the water is beautiful.
The foreground has recorded a little dark yet the water and mountains look pretty good.
The group of trees on the LHS and bit of tree peeking in on the RHS are a bit of a distraction.
Probably a slightly different composition and a little attention to the exposure and this would
    probably be a spectacular photograph.

All in all I would say well done and a very good start.

    Cheers.

    John.

These sheep [#2″] are great. I’d maybe have cut out anything that wasn’t sheepish or rocky. Great camouflage!

Lads, I appreciate the feedback. As I was saying I’m only starting off and the ideas ye have given me are great. I’m sure this site will be very helpful. I was under the impression that editing photos wasn’t done that much but I can see that a little touch up can make all the difference. Brendan I’ve checked some of your shots on flickr, very impressive. I must check out those magazines.
It’s great for people to tell you straight out in detail the good and not so good points to pictures. All constructive. Thanks again folks, much appreciated.

    Slan,

    Noel.
