Out and About, Part 1 (10 Pics)

The last couple of months I’ve been out taking mostly street (ish) shots.
My idea is to try to capture the city large scale in MF (a work in progress) and people scale in 135 format.
I’m still at the experimental stage with the street stuff to see what might work. For one thing I’m trying to get closer.
I’ve been using a few different films. Mostly, but not strictly, colour at night and b&w during the day.
I’m not looking for pairs, just thought it might be interesting to present some this way.Martin

I like 1 and 5 here-
I think 10 is too many to comment on-
fewer, larger, might be better, they both look quite promising-Others too, but so many gives me a choice…

I think this is a great set Martin.
Just out of interest, what’s the thinking behind the b&w during the day and colour at night? and also, the 35mm for people and medium format for larger scale stuff?
#s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 are stand outs for me.
Japanese people sleeping on trains could make a nice project. :)

The thinking behind b&w during the day and colour at night is that Tokyo is a very grey city during the day, but lights up really colourfully at night. I want to capture both sides of it.
Also I’m learning b&w printing and I never did much b&w photography before, so trying to get a feel for it.
It seems like a good way to do it.Last year I had started to take photographs of buildings with MF, tripod, very slow photography. MF obviously has more detail, a much better medium.
I like the idea of switching between the two types of photography, when I lack inspiration in one. One way is slow with lots of preparation and the other where you are just out and about with a camera hanging from your wrist taking shots fast as an opportunity arises.
Basically I decided to document the city, had been shooting 135 and MF, so it is a natural way to do it.
Btw Martin Parr did a series of photos on Japanese commuters, although I like his work generally I didn’t really like his take on the subject.

Japanese sleep everywhere, it is funny to see. And they have a strange ability to wake up just before their stop.Cheers,

This is an interesting set of photographs and enjoyable viewing.
I’m in the Joseph camp on re commenting on a large number of posts
but I’m not saying you shouldn’t post 10.
Just find it difficult scrolling up and down and trying to comment.For some reason I find the first 7 (excepting 4) very good.
I don’t find 8,9 and 10 quite as focussed (Not focus as in sharpness).
That said well done with them and good luck with your project.

I didn’t just want to post a just couple because they would have been the ones where luck played the biggest part.
With street, at least for now, for me it more about general technique than the perfect shot, if that makes sense.Cheers,
