50mm for a canon

Hey there,
I’m looking into getting a 50mm for a canon 40d, the canon made f1.8 looks good for the price. Anyone got any info about them?Hi – go get one asap.
You should get one on ebay for approx £70 – retail in ireland maybe €110.
optically superb for a lens of this price.

The f/1.8 is great for bokeh and low light.

Hi Emmet,
I got one of these recently and I really like it.
I decided I would go ahead and buy one while in Cork city
for a few days.
The few shops I checked had them listed at €145 – €150.
I found a shop willing to bargain and paid €120.
As Bren said you can get it cheaper.Either way you won’t be sorry.

Get the 1.4 instead :D
It’s a much better built lens and for a red dot lens, still pretty good pricewise.
Optically the Canon f1.4 is better but it is well-known for being a quite fragile due to a design flaw. The autofocus mechanism can completely break if the front part of the lens (the bit that telescopes in and out) suffers even a slight impact (I’ve lost a couple that way and I’m am very careful). So if you do get the 1.4 model, lens, make sure you also get the Canon hood as this will protect it.

I thought the 1.8 was the delicate one? :? I have a 1.4 and find it very good but I’d say the autofocus motor could be quieter.
I don’t know much about the f1.8 but the f1.4 is quite delicate. The front element group telescopes in an out and this mechanism can be damaged even by a soft knock so it’s wise to keep the plastic hood on the lens as much as you can as this seems to protect it. If you do a google search on this problem you will get a lot of information about it.
You’re right about the AF also being a bit noisy and slow. Unlike most other EF lenses it doesn’t have ring USM – instead it uses a little geared system called micro-USM. It’s a very sharp lens from f2 but suffers from slight softness / halation at f1.4 (nothing terrible though).
Thanks for the replies think ill go for the 1.8, it is three times cheaper and is not that much of a step down.
why not borrow the lenses form a trusting members, take comparsion shots and then decide. We’ve all really wanted something only to find it wasn’t really what i wanted. by the way – i’m based in county Cork and have a 50mm 1.4 you’re welcome to try it out if you haven’t made your final decision.
