I am in the process of adding to my collection and am venturing out for a new Canon 50D. Here lies the issue that i can’t decide on. With the 50D i can choose from the following lenses and have been reading up each of them but can’t decide what lens to go for.
My choices are between
EF-S 17-55 IS USM
EF-S 17-85 IS USM
EF-S 18-200 IS
I already have the EF 28-90 and a EF 75-300 so i can’t decide on the best one to go for. Having read review after review it has just complicated the issue and am now completely stumped so thought i’d see if any of you have any recommendations.
I want to go for a good all rounder and would have opted for the 18-200 but have read so many mixed reviews
Depends what you’re gonna be shooting, whether you plan on adding more lenses later, whether you shoot a lot in low light.
In the selection above, 17-55 f/2.8 has best image quality (by a long way, it’s as good as the L zooms), lets in most light and is most expensive.
17-85 has more range, but image quality isn’t as good as 17-55.
18-200 has a huge range but compromises (a lot) on image quality.
The new Canon 15-85 is a compromise somewhere in the middle of the above. It is very close to the 17-55 on image quality, a little cheaper and has a really good range. The 15mm end will give you a nice wide angle (same as 24mm on full-frame). It overlaps the 28-90 you have on a lot of focal lengths, but image quality will be infinitely better. review here
