Africa Day
-
esthermolineParticipant
I was at Africa Day at the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin, yesterday. Here’s a selection of the shots I took. What do you think? You can see more of them at

PS: I wonder if they have an European Day in Africa…
esthermolineParticipantThanks MMX!! I did try to use the short DOF as much as I could, as with the shot of the hand in the first photo, but my problem is that I need to get very close to the subject to get it, as I don’t have any zoom lenses or telephoto, the biggest focal length I can get to is 55mm. Same with getting closer to the expressions, etc. I’d need to get very close to the people, they’d notice me and the spontaneity would be gone! Thanks a lot for looking and replying!! :D
MMXParticipantesthermolineParticipantThanks, MMX! The lowest f/ number I seem to be able to achieve with my camera is 4.0 (at ISO 100), but that’s using the aperture priority mode. I haven’t started using the fully manual mode yet, haven’t got that far… I’ll have to try and see if I can get it down to that number!
OxanaParticipantesthermolineParticipantThanks Oxana! Just looked at your shots, you got some really good portraits there! I enjoy seeing what other people captured from an event where I took photos too, you got some of the same people I did and some other very interesting details I didn’t!
OxanaParticipantEsther, it’s interesting to see other peoples photographs taken on the same event. I will be going to Dublin LGBT Festival

This can be an interesting opportunity. Are there any protests expected? When there was a similar event in Brno where I lived, it ended with a huge street fight against nazis and one of the photographers who captured it won the Czech Press Photo contest later that year.
esthermolineParticipantI am going to try my best to go to this parade, never been to it before, but people have told me it’s lots of fun. As far as I know there’s no protests or anything like that involved, or at least protests that would have made the news and I would have heard about. I wouldn’t like to see one or hang around with my camera if it occurred!
b318ispParticipantGood shots, just watch that the camera is level (see #1). F4 is quite a shallow DoF, so should be fine for most of these kinds of shots. f5.6/6.3 would give you a sharper picture though. Learn to shoot in Av (I see you have Canon) – the smaller the number the shallower the DoF and the more critical is the focus point, but probably new that!
esthermolineParticipantThanks a lot for the advice! I do shoot mostly in Av now but haven’t got round to using fully manual mode yet. I do like using the shallow dof, I wish I had a lens that allowed me to get it at longer distances. I’ll watch about the camera being level, I hadn’t noticed that the first shot was a bit crooked!
