I dont have any formal training in photography-have just come into it from fine art background-but love animals, and try to incorporate them into my other work. Generally aim an shoot  Anyway this is a first effort..so as Ive just joined the forum and hope to improve, I took the plunge and put it up here ….Thanks!
Hi Lois,
Welcome and a nice first post not an anywhere near an expert but you will come across some :D .
Your picture looks blown out around the chest and loses detail because of it, did you use flash?
As I say you will get better comments and advice than what I will give here. What I can say is keep posting and enjoy it.
Hi Soda- thanks for that and yes now that you mention it I can see where the loss of defintition is-TBH I have D200 and just had it set for automatic including flash as well. Am a total newbie
Great critisism and a good starting point for me to learn to really look at detail and not rush! Thanks for the warm welcome also! I am glad I found this forum.

Hi Lois.
Welcome to the site. It’s a beautiful bird & lovely to see one up close. Lovely colours & detail even though, as Soda said, it is a little blown. Maybe you can try a shot using natural light (and maybe a more natural perch). :D Don’t worry about being a newbie as we have all been there. Some of the experts on the site will give you good advice on ways to improve your shots. Hope you enjoy.
