Lens for a wedding

Hi all i’m looking to buy a new lens
If you had one lens to do a wedding what lens would you usePatrick
To answer this question it might be relevant to know the following:
Are you using a full frame or crop camera?
Which brand of camera?
Are you the primary photographer or the 2nd shooter?
17-55 2.8
50 1.4 or 1.8
70 -200 2.8seem to be the chioce of most nikon wedding photographers
one lens i would get the 17-55 2.8 ( and the 50 1.8 you could get one second hand for less than €100)
you would also need a flash

There really is no one lens that will do, and also it would be handy if you had more than one body. Could you borrow an extra body from someone? I tend to use two or three bodies when I shoot a wedding. Also, I use 5 lenses for each wedding. There may be lenses that never get out of the bag, but better to have and not need, than need and not have. I use:
Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6, 70-200 f2.8, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, 50 f1.4, and 105 f2.8. I use all these lenses on a D300.
A decent tripod and flash, and if you have the room a reflector or two.

Hi Patrick, sorry for answering your question with another question, but your initial comment prompts me to ask, are you looking for a general purpose zoom to compliment what you already have?
If thats the case then you need the fastest one that you can afford.
Simple question but unfortunately not an easy answer to give. I will just add this : think about the weight : a f2.8 is good stuff but nearly one kilo. OK you just want one lens but if you wish to extent your work in the future, it will be a at least two lenses and a flash and perhaps two cameras… After a couple of hours you will wonder if you are a photographer or a heavy-lifter.
Nowadays a f/4 will give you great results even in low lighting. I can tell you : I don’t regret the hold days and when I want a soft background (which can be a reason to choose this kind of lens) I take my 80mm and have fun.
