To HDR or not to HDR
-
markst33Participant
2 photos I have taken with a HDR version as well. I like HDR sometimes. And before people go mad…I purposely went for the overcooked method. :) Let the hatemail begin… :D
AshleyParticipantThere are more than 100 different ways to shoot any subject – but the big question is: who’s the market and what are they going to use the images for !
JMac-2006Participantfirst image – don’t like the HDR at all – a boost in levels and saturation would be enough
second image – the HDR improves it – i find it interesting how saturated the colours are and how colours appeared that you just wouldn’t expect like the car itselfPixelleMembershphotoMemberI dont like the first one, but i do like the second it’s almost like a cartoon, in general i’m not a fan of hdr but i have seen some that were not over cooked and they looked good. :)
sndipoMemberI agree that the second one looks better in HDR. The first one is maybe just too much because it is a plain image and not so busy. I don’t know much about HDR at all but the colours look very very nice on both of them! And yes, the car looks very different alright..like recently painted or something. Brand new vintage :D
Very good photos and comparison! Well done!MMXParticipantThe second one looks interesting (especially the car), the first one is too unnatural. This strong HDR effect only looks in certain type of photos with complicated textures and clear lines (architecture, industrial, cars, machines)
markst33ParticipantThanks for all your comments
Ashley – The market is me. Thats who I take pictures for first and foremost so its down to whether I like them or not.
MMX – I was purposely going for Unnatural to see what the image looked like and to see what the responses would be.
Keep them coming folks.
MMXParticipantIt´s very easy to remember: unnatural style looks good with unnatural objects (cars, machines, architecture), while natural style looks good with natural objects (animals, plants, landscapes,)
miki gParticipantPersonally, I don’t like either of these. I always think that HDR should not be noticable to any great degree in a shot, but that’s only my opinion. If you like the effect yourself & that is what you were trying to achieve, then stick with it.
EnzymeParticipantI agree with Miki g to be honest. For me HDR should only be used to more or less replicate what the human eye sees. I don’t think the subject matter is really that strong to start with.
bigalguitarpickerParticipantI would say there’s nothing in either photograph that can’t be captured in one exposure, and consequently there’s no reason to use HDR technique. Having said that, if you’re not interested in that aspect, but more interested in the Graphic Image possibilities of the scene, use whatever technique you like and apply it as heavily or lightly as you wish!
DALYA00ParticipantI really like the second HDR image – I think that HDR really works well here. Rather than applying HDR to the first image, I would just give it a little boost. I am a great HDR fan and believe me, I often get carried away with it.
Most images will come out flat from an SLR camera and will not always reflect the scene that you wanted to capture in the first place. Correct use of HDR will reflect the scene.
The main thing is that if you are happy with the pp in images 1 and 2, then thats all that counts.
