All Purpose Lens(es)

I have £400 sitting in a paypal account and want to purchase a new lens to upgrade from the kit lens that came with my Canon 1000D.
I want a lens that is good for anything from portrait to sport if theres such a thing, sigma, canon any recommendations appreciated.
Would ebay be a good source for perhaps a 2nd hand lens??
If it´s a trustworthy seller, eBay is a good source, I always received what I expected.
Lens for &400 – for indoor sports as well as for portraits you could use Tokina 50-135 f/2.8, however for outdoor sports (football, car racing, etc.) it will be too short.
If you shoot outdoors, you could also consider the Canon 70-200 f/4 L.I have been reading alot and i am focusing in on lenses
perhaps a combination of Canon EFS 55-250 and the Canon 50mm f1.8
Canon EFS 55-250 is too slow for sports (it doesn´t have USM) and for indoor sports it´s completely unusable
