Am going to attempt some sports photography at a club GAA match tomorrow night and am hoping to get some tips/advice which will help.

Will be using a canon 5ood with 55-250mm lens.

    Hi Bean,

Try these settings. You can select a faster shutter speed if they are still too ‘blurred’ – light dependent.

ISO 200 – then Auto ISO if image is too dark. (I’d imagine your lens will be a f/5.6 at the longest focal lenght.)
    TV (shutter) mode
1/400 (you can lower this step by step if the image is still too dark – or increase it if images are blurred)
    Al Servo shooting Mode
    Continuous shooting
    Partial metereing.

    Catch the players faces always.

Panning is always a kool techique for sports – as you can use a shutter speed of 1/60 or 1/80 to let more light in.

Depending on the image size you pick – you could need extra memory.

In between shots – scan through the images and delete the bad ones to save card space.

    Have fun,

Start with ISO 400, and a shutter speed of 1/500 sec. Use Shutter Priority.

Your lens is very short, especially for a GAA pitch. Try to only shoot action that comes close to you.

I’d ignore trying panning shots, since they are very very hard to do, and when you’re beginning, you’d waste more time trying that when you could be getting other shots.

I’ve loads of tips on my website for sports photography, if you’re interested.

    Best of luck with it.
