Dusk, Valentia Harbour

Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 31mm
ISO: 100
Shutter: 30 sec
Camera: Canon EOS 30D
Lens: EF-S 17-55I spent last weekend on Valentia Island on a tour with my Dublin-based choir, The Mornington Singers. While we were out celebrating a successful concert in the pub, I stepped outside and noticed this amazing sky. I quickly grabbed my camera, and used a wall, a lens cap, and a chapstick as a makeshift tripod to capture this image.
After four days in Valentia, I’m in love with the island! I think I truly saw Ireland at it’s best last weekend with the good weather, and it ain’t a half-bad place!

Love this pic! Is that a lighthouse shining bright?
Thanks!
Yes, it is the Cromwell Point Lighhouse on Valentia Island. The land behind the boats on the right is Beginish Island, which is between Valentia and the mainland.

lukeleeimagesParticipantDo you think it was possible to get some longer exposures in and get some star trails going? The stars look so clear and bright! Looks like a stunning spot!

The problem with an even longer exposure is that the boats won’t stay put. Even at 30 seconds, you can see they aren’t perfectly sharp. I had a few other exposures which were worse. I suppose a long enough exposure would just turn them into a blur, but I thought they were too important to the composition for that.

lukeleeimagesParticipantfair enough and thought that might be the case but wanted to ask anyway…..great shot!
KellydamienParticipantDougLParticipantHere’s a question. Can anyone see banding in the sky? I’m seeing it on my macbook, but not on any other monitor I use. The thing is, I trust the macbook more when it comes to colour management.

Green glensParticipantWell done Doug. I think the phrase “less is more ” would apply here. Your right about that part of Ireland. Did you make it to the skelligs?

………John!Thanks John!
I didn’t make it out to the Skelligs, unfortunately. They are on my list though! Some of the choir stayed on an extra day to visit them, but I needed to get back.

I thought it was the sun.
sndipoMemberNope, no banding to me. Amazing shot. Wouldn’t think it’s taken in Ireland, haha, kind of too clear of a night perhaps. The lighthouse looks like the Sun alright but then again you said dusk, which is after a sunset.. Well captured, well done! Will have to give the place a visit myself now! :)

Me neither because I thought it was Valencia

It most definitely was Ireland, although I will agree it doesn’t look like it! The weather was absolutely perfect all day, and I’ve never seen the sky look like that in Ireland before. I have another one from just after sunset, almost two hours earlier, in which the sky is almost completely orange. I might have a go at processing it tomorrow night if the kids decide to go to bed on time.
