These photo’s are so far unedited apart from the one tying up the dress. I like the photo but at the same time there is something not quite right about it. Any thoughts? It was my first wedding and as some of you will know I was sooo nervous. Any comments bad or good most welcome. Many thanks.

I’m looking at these on a really poor screen right now,but a few comments…..It looks like you did fine if it was your first wedding,
It seems like you’ve used direct flash for most of your indoor shots,
Try bouncing the flash whenever possable, when done right it gives a far better result,
The pic of the dress is fine , but there seems to be a strong shadow falling on the dress,
the pic of the lads …if the guy at the end wasn’t sticking out from the building it might have made for a better shot,the blown out sky behind him is a little distracting.
The bride coming down the stairs can be a difficult shot to “light”, maybe off camera flash might help here.
These are just suggestions and I hope you won’t view them as negative.

I posted the one of the guys as I wasn’t happy with the guy on the end. In hindsight, I should have made sure he stood in against the building. Any more suggestions welcome.
For the close up ones (outside of house) I used a canon 50m, all the others I think it was a canon 24-70m 2.8. Any more comments anyone? would love some more comments good or bad.

Well done on your first attempt.
You’ve captured the brides expressions well, she looks radiant. The shot of her with her Dad, captures his proud (but nervous) expression. I think that shot might work well in B&W.
A shallower depth of field may have made this an even better shot.
The one with the bride and groom would have been better without the priest’s shoulder in the foreground, but again you have captured the moment well.
The group shot doesn’t work. Its also a bit overexposed.
Try tweeking the white balance on the one of the page boy, or try it in B&W.
The bride coming down the stairs shows direct flash (bouncing of the door). The door and person in jeans is also distracting, try a tighter crop.
You seem to be able to capture the moment well, just work on bounce flash and composition.Hi Maggie,
nice photos. I’ve shot many weddings and I still get nervous for each one. I would worry if I didn’t, it’s perfectly natural.
I’m not the best at giving critics, but I’ll try a bit on you photos.
1) I know you’re setting the scene, but not really a wedding photo as such. One thing I try and do when I see these opportunities is save them for when I can include an element of the wedding – be it the bride of groom or just a member of the family. It helps tie everything in.
2) Nice light, the hands are very awkward & too prominent though. I think you should have been a little to the left and a bit further back to stress the detail of the dress rather than the hands.
3) I like this shot – it has a few elements that I like to include in my photos – back lighting and reflections. I would have tried to be a bit more creative with the reflection of the glass in the door, possibly getting the bridesmaid in the reflection as the bride came down the stairs.
4) same as no. 1
5) Nice moment & positioning. I like the inclusion of the person in the background. I’d have waited a moment or two until the mans arm moved from obstructing the boys face.
6) As mentioned above – bit of a mistake having the lads hanging off the end. Also, give these shots good amount of border space when framing. The fella on the right is getting his foot cut out of frame. The “fig leaf” hand positioning and square on composition is too static for my liking. You did well getting them out of direct + overhead sunlight though.
7) Nice shot.
8 ) Again, nice shot. Possibly a touch tight around the hands.
9) Not sure about this one – I think a bit more effort to attempt something more daring would have paid off.
How do you think you did? Will you do anything differently next time?

Glad to see you got through relatively unscathed.
1&4 might work best as small pics on a page setting the scene, with another more powerful image.
2. I’d also like to see more of the dress, but its nice.
3. I like this. However I’d definitely crop to square format, or whatever it takes to get rid of the two door frames. My eye gets drawn to that ugly door hinge on the right. Try putting your two hands over the doors when the image is on screen & see if it improves in your opinion?
5. I’m afraid this doesn’t work for me with the arm & shadow over the face.

9. I like this, but as an additional image. If you had, for example, a shot of the B&G cutting the cake as the final page, with this as a smaller image, I think it’d look well.Hope you don’t think I’m being a bit hard, but wedding photography is a hard game!

Here are a few more. Your comments are most appreciated and valued. I can see the mistakes I’ve made and will learn from them. Again, none of these have been edited (not even brightened) yet so please take this into account. Any suggestions on editing also most welcome.Hi Maggie,
Remember the golden rule here is to ask yourself if these are what the bride and groom were after. If they are then thats all you have to worry about.
I realy like shots 16, 19 and 21 (thats a classic).
Watch out for how the dress is sitting in pictures 22 and 23. Also depending on the brides opinion, she may not find picture 23 the most flattering.
Picture 17 is a nice shot but would benefit from a different background.
I like picture 25, but again watch your background. (try toning down the exposure of the background, particularly thr blown tree trunk). If you use lightroom, this is very easy to achieve).
Picture 24: nice shoy, just tweek the exposure.
14: have a look at the bridesmaids expression (she looks bored).
13: Watch where you stand, a 70-200 can help out for this type of shot.
Overall you have some nice shots here and I’m sure the couple will be happy with them.
Post processing I use Adobe lightroom, everyone is different but I find it quick and easy to use.
