B+W 3.0 1000x – 10 Stopper

This is not for photo critique – just merely for members info.

I finally received my 10 stop filter today after months on order. I took a quick spin out to give it a go in bright day light.

    Canon EOS 7D & Sigma 10-20mm f/4, Tripod.

Tip of Wicklow Head, today, hazy sun high over my left shoulder, 4pm, high over cast clouds.

Here’s the normal shot using f/11 – giving me a 1/80 exposure – straight out of camera.

Here’s the same scene seconds later – using f/22 – giving me a 30” exposure. I could have went way longer using f/29…but was just experimenting.

A mid sized trawler passed by about 50 meters in front of me during this shot.

Mid to late evening – and with good clouds – you could easy get a 4-6 minute exposure – or longer if you use a smaller aperture.

The images tend to be a little on the ‘warm’ side – but if you do a custom white balance – or adjust in RAW – its not an issue.

All i need to find now is some nice scenes!

    ciao

They are a great item to have in the bag Brendan
I have had mine for a while now but couldn’t be with out it
I don’t use it all the time but when you have decent clouds it’s great
the white balance is not an issue I just tweak mine in raw
    enjoy the filter

I’m going to have to get me one of these. Do Lee or Cokin make a 10-stop filter? Is there some reason the screw-in B&W is better?

    Doug,
They gotta be the screw in types, otherwise you’d get a load of light leakage coming in the sides.

    Hi Doug –

“The Lee 10 stop is said to have on one side a thin foam gasket to make it light tight when inserted into the closest slot to the lens”

    .

    Cokin do not do one.

Here’s a link to a comparison of Lee verus B+W. Note the ‘warm colour’ cast on the B+W – but its very easy to remedy both in camera with a custom white balance or later in RAW.

I don’t have the Lee system – which is why i chose the B+W version.

Hoya also so an ND400 (9 f-stops), we have some on order, but delivery is a bit slow at the moment as there has been a huge run on all ND filters.
