Hi,
I’m using noise reduction in lightrm 3. Just wondering if I should be careful with it?..ie: if I crank it up to much to remove the noise will it affect the photo on printing? ISO was set at 2500 on a canon 5d Mark II.
Thanks in advance
I would say don’t go over half way with either slider, especially with that (relatively) low ISO. Otherwise you can lose a lot of detail. Try it on a few shots, export them, and then zoom in and have a look. Adjust accordingly :)
The 5D MkII handles noise really well even at 2500 so you may not need to go crazy with that slider. The ugliest noise is chroma so that’s the one you want to get under control (luminance noise is has slightly more grain-like qualities)
There is no need to remove all the noise for printing as it may not even show up at your print size. Try setting the document size to be the size you want to print at and then view your document at ‘print size’ using the zoom tool in Photoshop. That should give you a rough idea.
P.S. If you have a lot of noise and LR3 isn’t able to get rid of your without over-smoothing detail try one of the dedicated and excellent noise reduction tools like Dfine from Nik Software
