New to forum and DSLR’S
-
Casey78Participant
Hi all,
I’m Casey from Laois and I am new to the forum and I’m hoping to buy my first DSLR in the very immediate future to upgrade from my Sony Cybershot point and shoot camera.
I have spent the last month researching and reviewing several cameras from places like cameralabs.com and other review sites.I think I have finally settled on a DSLR that I believe fulfills all my needs as I start my new hobby(I really need something new to get me off the bloody golf course as I am tired of being awful at it  )
The camera I haven chosen is the Sony Aplha 500.
It has everything I think I might need and I have compared it to the all the ranges from the”Big 2″ in Canon and Nikon.
I am impressed with the built in Anti-shake and the 5fps shooting as well as the tilting screen etc.Obviously as I’m new too all this I don’t know how essential these features are but I do believe I will benefit from the Anti-shake built in and I would be into a lot of sport so I think the 5fps feature will be of benefit to me for taking pictures of some of the sports I’m into.
Basically I would like some feedback on this Sony Alpha 500 from your good selves or on the Sony range in general ,I do like the Sony brand as a whole and most if not all of the electronic equipment I buy would be Sony.
From reading various forums I get the sense that Sony DSLR’s can be looked down on by some as they are new to the DSLR market and Canon and Nikon are the only thing you should buy?
Really my brain is fried right now as I have read so many forums and reviews that I don’t know what to believe!
I understand everyone has their favorites but I would just like to know are the Sonys a decent range of camera and this one in particular? If your actually still reading this I would like to say thanks!! I’m sure a few have rolled their eyes and or fallen asleep with boredom as another newbie asks silly questions!Any advice would be greatly appreciated
miki gParticipantHi Casey.
Welcome to the site. As a Canon user I can’t really give you any advice on the Sony range, but basically some members here use Sony cameras & have produced excellent photos. I don’t think Canon is any better than Sony, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung etc etc, it’s just what I feel comfortable using & I like the choice of lenses etc they offer.
Cameras can be like golf clubs, tees, golf balls, they don’t make great golfers. If you’re crap at it, all the equipment in the world won’t make you a better golfer or photographer, but it could make it a bit easier to get good results.
If you think the Sony Alpha 500 is the one you feel most comfortable with, go for it, because if you don’t feel comfortable with whatever camera you buy, you won’t be happy with it anyway. Good luck with whatever you decide.shutterbugParticipantHello Casey, welcome to the site, a really good place to learn and lose an hour or ten :)
I use Sony, I started with the a100 Sony’s first venture into SLR, I found it very easy to get used to,
the anti shake is a great feature of Sony and being inbuilt in the camera means any lens you put on
will have added stability. I now have the a700 and will be sticking with it for a long time I think.Good luck with your choice, I am sure you wont be disappointed, look forward to seeing your pics
soon.MMXParticipantThey bought Minolta so they arenĀ“t completely new. The disadvantage of Sony might be lenses – they are perfect (made by Zeiss) but expensive like hell.
