Pentax K-x

I’m a Canon user. I haven’t done any Photography for over a year now, I’ve sold of all my Canon gear, had a Macro Lens, Ringlite, 6 lenses, 3 of which was L series, tripods, 3 heads, Speedlite Transmitter etc etc… sold everything ages ago.

I want to get into photography again, but before I spend loads of money again on Canon, which I love. I started reading about the Pentax K-x
DSLR. Now I realise it’s an entry level camera, but the reviews I’ve read seems very good.

All I want to do is buy the camera, use it for a while and either upgrade or possibly go back to Canon and replace everything I had.

The only downside I found, was even though the camera is very affordable, I’m looking at accessories as well. If I were to upgrade Pentax, their lenses seem to be fairly expensive, with but a small choice of accessories, where as with Canon, you can pick and choose lenses, loads of bargains etc to be found.

Just want to hear other people’s opinions.

Anyone used or owns the K-x DSLR here. it looks like a stunning entry level DSLR

I know what some might say, buy what you want and know, well I’m always curious, I did the same with Nikon a long time ago, bought a Nikon, lenses etc… and although I actually loved it, I still prefered Canon, so I sold it.
On the other hand it might not be too bad, owning a camera with fewer accs available, as my wife always complains that one day I’ll give her a heart attack with all the accs I keep on buying.

Anyways, like to hear your thoughts…

My thoughts would be don’t hobble yourself by your camera choice now. You’re buying into a system, and its the whole package I would recommend looking at, not just the body (which will be superceded/ you will replace down the line).

If you haven’t done any photography in over a year, I would ask what lead to that, and what are the things really important to your photography. The answer to that will determine what you need.

FWIW, I’ve always been impressed by the Pentax dslrs (despite never being an owner),

It can be either stunning or entry level, never both
Personally I see all these entry level cameras as gadgets for people who just want to show off with a DSLR but use it as a point and shoot.
If you want a Pentax, buy an used K20D, it´s one of the best cameras that you can get for the price. Even the lower K200D is something that I wouldn´t refuse. But if you are seriously into photography, avoid entry level, it´s too big compromise (no matter if it´s Pentax, Nikon, Canon or whatever)

Thanx for all the info guys.

To answer some questions. I’m into pretty much all photography, love landscaping especially panorama’s, macro and sports photography. I’m also thinking of getting into astro photography.

I used Canon for years, still love Canon, I sold all my gear as I just never had time for photography anymore. I made some investments with the money which is paying off now. I also changed work a few months ago which means I have the time and money now to do photography.

The reason I tried Nikon was that when I bought my first SLR it was a Canon EOS 500N, stunning film camera. I feel I come from a background of too little experience with film and other brands. When someone talked about Nikon or any other make, I wouldn’t even have known how that camera feels in my hand. So once I started selling my gear, I did a bit of experimentation as well, bought the Nikon, used it for 2 months (where I had time) and sold it again, not really loosing much money, which of course is good.

I stumbled accross the Pentax K-x by accident on the internet about a week ago, looking at Canon, and it really grabbed me. I’m not interested in Sony, Olympus or any other make, but I have always like Pentax from I “think” it was the Z50.

Anyways, that when I thought before splurging again, I’d like to try the K-x. The features I like is 4.7fps, which is faster than any entry level DSLR, high ISO with a good noise profile. Megapixels don’t bother me as much, 12MP is plenty. And the HDR mode as well.

I honestly wasn’t aware that Pentax had such great optics, as is mentioned here.

How does Pentax’s optics compare to the like of the Canon 100-400 Lens, which is probably my favourite Canon Lens?

Also, in terms of focusing and speed of focusing and optical quality?

If I were to stay with Pentax, I’d probably keep the K-x as a backup / walkaround body, but I’d want a semi-pro body as well… any recommendations?

Anyone used the Tamron 18-250 Lens, as a everyday lens?

    Thanx guys

“Tamron 18-250 Lens, as a everyday lens?”

Using this piece of junk every day? No way, even if you paid me… :D
Lenses longer than 150 mm are something that you need only in specific situations, usually when photographing animals or sports, so don´t let manufacturers fool you that you need it every day. Moreover the image quality on the long end of these ultrazooms is usually so low that if you crop the same thing from a photo taken with 150mm lens it won´t look any worse.
If you buy something like 28-135 it will cover 99 % of your needs with much higher quality than any ultrazoom.

“How does Pentax’s optics compare to the like of the Canon 100-400 Lens”

They don´t have anything like 100-400. They only have 60-250 f/4.0 that will give you the same range as 100-400 on a FF body.

“semi-pro body as well… any recommendations?”

K20D or K-7, you don´t have many options.

This camera is a joke. Works with AA accus, which are heavy and less efficient than dedicated Li-ion. You need a good one, because K-x is like a spoiled kid and won’t take anything but sanyo enelops.
I agree, that choice should be driven by ‘needs’. For astrophotography canon is the best option. Nikon works better with cheap thirdparties like sigma. Just use search option and google. Question like this one is repeated endlessly.
