I have been doing some printing with Ilford MGFB Glossy paper and, as people tend to report, “glossy” in a fibre paper is not like “glossy” in a RC paper. But what if I wanted a fibre paper that had that RC glossy look? i.e. shiny? Is there such a thing?
The only option is glazing which is difficult. For glazing modern fixers require the addition of another chemical called alum I think its a hardener. You can do it on glass or a glazing drum. I did notice in the past that single weight papers used to have a higher gloss . For some reason toning in tea adds a strong gloss but you end up with a brown print. You may have to go back to RC if you want that high gloss.
Thanks Eddie. I have a look into glazing (there are a couple of thread on fadu.co.uk about it). It seems messy and difficult. I am considering just going back to using RC paper for this stuff in order to get the look that I want. It’s cheaper as well :-)
