Interesting to hear that they’re not common. Back where I’m from originally (not Cork but Tipp!) they are still
pretty common. Apparently years ago (40s to 60s), my great-grandfather used to catch them by putting some sticky stuff on a branch (molasses i think) and breed them. Not sure why tbh, but sounds like they used to be very common at one point.
Nice shot Jenny. Good detail. I read recently about two guys being in court for trappping these & other finches for export. Apparently they have recently become a protected species in Ireland.

Seems they are becoming a rare site, I have only seen 2 in the last 7 years and these were not even at the many feeders I put out……./Mikka
Thanks Miki and Mikka, when I was a youngster they were plentiful but I can count the
number of times I have spotted them on one hand in the last ten years, so an added
treat to see one let alone being able to get a picture of one. I know where they are but
it is still a rare sighting for me.
