Lenses for Canon eos 1d Mark 2 digital

I have just bought a used Canon eos 1d Mark 2 and as some of my lenses are DC and not suitable for full frame, I need to buy macro, zoom, and wide angle lenses which are not overly expensive. I would be grateful for suggestions. Kevin B :?:

You have just bought a great camera, and I feel that to do it justice you need to put good lenses in front of it. I have always believed that putting money into great lenses rather than camera bodies is the best investment. This way if you ever upgrade the body, you won’t have to upgrade your lenses.

I am not sure what you are wanting to use the lenses for, but going for a Canon 17-40 F4 L, Canon 70-200 F2.8 or F4 L IS, and the Canon EF 100 macro would give you a pretty good setup that should meet most needs.

I know that after just having bought a camera body this is probably not what you are wanting to hear, as these lenses won’t be cheap – but just giving my honest opinion… :-)

    Thanks Lawrence,
I will need to put off buying for a while and save up for one of these lenses.

A must lens for everybody is a 50mm 1.8. Try to get a mk 1 second hand as it has a metal mount. Either way a new one (mk 2) which has a plastic mount should cost around €100.

Congrats on upgrading to a 1D. There are no shortcuts with lenses, but you can make smart choices and get very good image quality without spending silly money.

Canon 17-40 f/4 L and 70-200 f/4 L are excellent quality lenses for a reasonable price, particularly second hand.

The 100mm macro can be had for £300-350 second hand which is also excellent value and doubles as a useful portrait lens.

In the future, you can upgrade to 16-35 f/2.8 and the f/2.8 and IS versions of the 70-200 as your budget allows.

Look forward to seeing what you can do with 8.5fps!!

Just to say Kevin that the 1DMK 11 is not a full-frame camera …it has a 1.3 crop.

This is true, there’s still a 1.3x crop, but the 1D Mk II is analagous to full frame (in regards to lenses mounts) as it has an EF lens mount which won’t accept EF-s (DC/DX) lenses.
