Uncle John’s

this is the house my late Uncle John lived in his whole life. Since his death some 5 years ago it has gotten a bit run down. i’ve long been meaning to take these pictures, the colours of the floor and the fireplace tiles were always pretty captivating to me when i visited, which i did very often as the house is only two minutes walk from home. my niece Leah, ie. the girl in the Roscommon jersey(though she was born in Carlow and lives in Kildare but talks with a Dublin accent) only vaguely remembers John, only that he gave her chocolate buttons when she visited! she’s pretty lucky she never knew his dog Skippy, who was the least friendly border collie i’ve ever met, scared the bejaysus out of me  Skip used to sit behind John’s chair when we were in the house and growl at us until he was locked in the shed, where he’d put his nose through a hole in the door and show us his teeth! Also behind the chair in the corner was where John kept his shotgun, which obviously fascinated me and my brothers, i never saw him use it, apparently he used to shoot the odd pheasant when he was younger, but he growled at us too if ever we went near it!
funnily enough, my brother Donal, the lad in the doorway (my model and assistant  ) looks more like John the more i look at that image, put a cap on his head and an old jumper you’d not tell the difference!

Some colour scheme alright :) The first and last frames stand out for me,

I really like the last shot. Might make a cool high contrast black and white. Cool set though.

    thanks folks.
to be honest i wouldn’t consider a black and white, the images are all about the colour, that was my reason in taking them. i’m not a big fan of black and white purely for the sake of it anyways.maybe i’l venture back with a film camera one of the days and reshoot some aspects of it in black and white film, it’d be a different project though.

Interesting series. I think the first shot tells you everything you need to know. You can almost picture the rest of the house in your mind from looking at this shot.
