Well am making the same error and donno what to do.

using auto focus and rest manual i just cannot get the focus on the birds on the top of the shed.
I do zoom in and the gauge says focused, that is the ‘dot’ sorry about the amateurish lingo.
got a great shot of a woody on top of shed, he/she had been feather plucking and i managed to snap one as it flew away from body, it and the bird slightly out of focus.
ditto a housesparrow feeding its young, you can even recognise that the mama gave the chizler a choker (had me SO worried when i viewed on computer)!
    a peanut.
    horrified to see that actually.
but that close and yet so far away from the ….perrrrrfect!
    please advise.

As birds move, make sure you are using AI Servo for focusing and not One Shot. This is for canon. Do the same for whatever the Nikon equivalent is.

thanks for that, yes i have a canon and was wondering whether to do this or spot metering, a guy also told me to go to ISO 100 instead of 200
    I will try.
Friend is a great photographer and he said they were great shots and certainly i wasnt to worry about the slightly off, for i was zooming in too strongly to see the focus in em.
he told me how to sharpen them a bit using ‘unsharpen’ they do look considerably better with that slight tweek, twit, towit!!!
good day today going over bits of my camera settings and a bit on the photoshop part.
enrolled in photoshop at IADT for the autumn. looking forward to that.
    far more perking now.

    Hi Ann.
Normally when the dots light to indicate proper focus, it is at that point that the focus will be correct. Try to get that point at the birds eye. Once the eyes are sharp, you normally have a good clear shot. Also a higher ISO speed will help avoid camera shake.
