Sensor cleaning disaster
-
b318ispParticipant
Guys, I noticed some dust spots on my sensor, so got out my blower/brush. I started off cleaning by by blowing, which made no difference. I then gently used the brush – and that seemed to smear whatever was on the sensor and make it worse.
I then did a bad thing. I got some lens cleaning fluid and the lens cleaning cotton buds that I had in a kit and, thinking that cleaning a lens and cleaning a sensor amounted to similar things, I proceeded. Well the marks were removed but, once evaporated, the fluid left residue marks behind, maybe because I used too much.
So, I’ve ended up with a sensor covered in these residue marks. I brought the camera to Berminghams and they were not willing to clean it. They recommended sending it back to Canon for them to review and clean. They were not willing to take the chance that they would be blamed for any damage to the sensor.
So, now I’m in a dilema. Sending it back to Canon will be expensive and I’d be without the camera for quite a while. On the otherhand, I could see if anyone else will clean it (or do it myself). If the sensor is properly cleaned, it will confirm if it is damaged or not.
IF it is damaged, I waste the cost of the clean. Conversely, if I send it to Canon and it is NOT damaged I waste the cost of sending it there and the time.
Anyone have any advice to give me on this???
Ger 208kParticipantHave you considered using a sensor cleaning kit. they include a wet & dry wipe. Wet first & then dry.
Also there’s a camera cleaning clinic at Croke Pk http://www.forwardevents.co.uk/photovision/dublin.php” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;. You might get some free advice.Ger
DorParticipantTry talking to these guys http://www.camerarepaircentre.com/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; I dealt with Declan who did some repair work on my Canon. They might be able to help and at a lower cost to you than sending off via Canon.
b318ispParticipantThanks guys. I’ve orderd a visible dust kit, will give it one more go, see the outcome and go from there.
crampParticipantI don’t think the visible dust kit will do the job as it is a dry cleaner, Try to get a hold of some sensor swabs by Photographic solutions I use them all the time and find them excellant, I see you are in Rathoath there is a Nikon Repair centre in Summer Hill and they clean sensors for about 50 euros I think, I would be surpised if the sensor is damaged.
b318ispParticipantFor the benefit of anyone who comes across the post by search, I’m back on track using the VIsible Dust oil/water kit. It worked perfectly and first time. No sign of dirt or damage at 200% full RAW. I’d actually go so far to say that it is very straight forward to self clean the sensor given a reasonable amount of precautions, patience and technique.
miki gParticipantGreat to hear that you’re back on track & with no permanent damage to your sensor. It could have been a costly one.
b318ispParticipantclimberhuntParticipantI had about a dozen persistent dust spots on my sensor, and got sick of having to clone them out. So I got the following:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270322996904″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; (6 swabs in each pack)
I used one swab as directed, and the results were perfect. It removed all of the spots on one go.
Rgds,
Dave.lousyParticipantI’ve posted this on this site before. It shows how to clean your sensor. I find it quite easy. But remember… don’t clean it if it isn,t dirty… and be careful.
