If you want a safe backup, consider buying a NAS instead of an ordinary HDD.

ah right! well, I dont think i am going pro at this time of my life and i dont think my ‘lost image/s’ will mean losing say, 1 million euros, if it did i would sell the lot now and forget the hard drives/s!!!

    NAS has two big advantages:
First advantage is that you can access it from anywhere, so for example if you are on holiday, you can send your photos home every day and you don´t have to be afraid that you lose or accidentally format your memory card or that you simply won´t have enough space.
Second advantage is that it can be used as a disaster recovery option, but in this case you don´t keep it at home, or at least not in the same room as your computer.

Take a look in that well known photographic dealers, Eason’s. I bought a 1TB Seagate for £70 there and they also had 1.5TB at £90

just a mnor point, NAS is not a backup solution and neither is a single hard drive

Theoretically NAS can be any storage device which is accessible via network so it can be a single external hard drive with network interface.
And of course it can be used as a backup solution, moreover more secure than a classic external HDD because it can be kept in a different place.

No, a backup solution is something that is taken offline once the backup is performed. As a nas would be online all the time it is prone to the same failures as a direct attached raid.

No, this is just one type called cold backup.
