First visit to Ireland.

Hello. My name is Robert. My wife and I will be taking our first visit to Ireland at the end of October. Neither of us has a drop of Irish blood in us, but we’ve always admired the beautiful landscapes and great literature. Although photography has been my hobby for a long time, most of my work for many years has been limited to family photos or taking school photographs that I shared with students and faculty (I was a high school principal). I found this wonderful website while searching for information about photography in Ireland. I hope looking at the various posts will help me as I plan for what I hope to be a great travel experience.

Taking weather and tour bus travel into consideration, I plan on traveling as light as possible. As of now, I’m planning to bring a Nikon D200 DSLR with two lenses – A Nikon AF-S 12-24mm f4 ED and a Nikon 35mm F2.0. I thought a long lens might be excess weight I don’t need to lug around. I’m open to suggestions if anyone has other thoughts on what I should bring in terms of lens selection, etc.

It was difficult to choose where to visit while in Ireland. Seeing that it is our first trip to the Emerald Isle we decided on taking a tour rather than travel on our own. Some of the locations will include Dublin, Killarney, Dingle Peninsula, and Galway.

Thank you for putting together such an informative site.

Hi Robert, your tour will bring you to some good areas for photography, I always find tours great
when I dont know where to go! My favourite travel lens is 18-200 it seems to cover most eventualities
for me anyway. I suppose it depends what you like to photograph, but your wide angle will have the
landscape taken care of, and the 35mm will have the city sights covered.

I hope you have a good trip and that the weather is kind to you (it makes such a difference if the sun shines)
look forward to seeing some of your shots.

Thank you, Jenny. I’ll hope for good weather, but will plan for rain. I may bring an older Sigma 28-200 or 28-300 zoom lens. I don’t want to have too much to lug around on a tour bus. In any case, I’m very excited about the trip. I hope we’ll get an opportunity to return in future. There is so much more in Ireland we’ll want to visit.

    Bob
