Champagne bottle found along Thames
-
fguihenParticipant
Took a few shots of this bottle that i found while walking along the river Thames a few weeks back.
Still unsure what angle i like best. In the first one also, there was a tiny man in the extreme background that i cropped out as i thought he was ever so slightly drawing attention from the subject.
Please let me know which one you prefer, why, and if you think anything could be done to improve either of these photos. Thanks all.

They are well exposed photographs of a champagne bottle on a pavement.
The bottle is nice and sharp, well placed in the frame and the the background
is thrown slightly out of focus. All that said I am struggling despite several viewings to see what the image is
all about.
The subject in itself is not particularly interesting.
Maybe it’s a social comment and I’m not getting it.I don’t mean to be harsh.
Just saying what I honestly think which of course is just one opinion.Cheers,
John.
fguihenParticipantno offence taken at all John. These photos came about as i was walking along the Thames and saw an empty champagne bottle beside a nice building. Just thought id try my hand at something a little different.
was going for depth with the pavement lines, an interesting yet blurred background with the nice building, and the bottle was just for some foreground interest. usually you would see cans or beer bottles and think nothing of it, but a champagne bottle outside like a regular can/beer bottle just looked out of place and a good idea at the time.
I could pretend its a social commentary on how poor/homeless drunks are getting so much money that they can afford champagne, or that the rich property tycoons who lost all due to the crash now have to resort to drinking on the streetst or something else, but im not that clever, and just thought it might make a nice image!
Thanks for the critique, at least i know im getting my processing technique down a bit better.

I appreciate your reaction to my critique.
You are right, of course, to experiment and try new things and see how they turn out.
Not every photograph will be a winner but that shouldn’t stop us trying.Cheers,
John.
BelishaParticipantAs they stand the two images lack a certain ‘something’ but understand why you got involved. Maybe if you had placed the bottle so that the tall blue glass building featured and perhaps the bench I can see in your second image, the composition might have had that something extra. Just a thought. With ideas like yours in this case you need to try many many different compositions just to see where the idea goes. Don’t know if you did this.
miki gParticipantHi fguihen.
These images don’t tell me why you photographed the bottle & seem to be missing a story. That said, however, I see that it is a still life as opposed to a documentary & perhaps this is why I’m having difficulty with them. The inclusion of the buildings is taking my attention away from the bottle & I am going into “documentary or street mode” & I think they could work better for me in one of these catagories. If for example #1 was shot from a little more to the left, the lead-in lines of the paving would naturally lead the eye to the bottle & by possibly including, say, an out of focus couple walking away hand in hand further along the same line of paving, it could become a strong documentary shot.
I think for a still life to work, the bottle needs to be a lot more dominant & the distractions of the buildings need to be eliminated. This is only my opinion though & I don’t want my ramblings to come across in a negative way. Since I’m not an experienced photographer in still life, you can take my comments with a grain of salt. :)
