Breakin’ The Habit

This is the first attempt i’ve made at an idea i’ve had floating around in my head.
I’m of 2 minds on it, I like the layout but i’m not sure about the focus. I used a 50mm at f1.8 and 1/200, onboard flash (23.20 when i took the pictures)
Tell me what you think, i’m open to all ideas here.

    50mm, 1/200, f1.8 onboard flash, polarizing filter:

    Hi Dave
Perhaps ‘breaking the habit’ may be a more apt title, I probably would prefer if the box and lighter were a little more in focus, I was drawn to those two items instantly, mainly because they are so out of focus, otherwise its an nice shot.
    cheers

Thats actually a better title. I’d the title in my head before i composed the picture so it never occurred to me.
Yeah i wasnt sure whether it’d work with the box and lighter out of focus. I’ll work more on it again tomorrow, still have 8 cigs left in the box :) thanks for the input its much appreciated :)

Agree more depth of field needed, and maybe tone down the flash
a tad, or even do away with the flash and use a directional torch (overhead)
maybe on the cigarettes with just a hint of light spill on the box and lighter?

as i feared :D yeah i’ll give it another go today with natural light.i’ll get more focus on the lighter and cigarette box to.

heres my retake. have a few more but this was the most promising.

I really liked the composition of the original one. With the focus of the first retake I think it would look great. Congrats on quitting.

Oh i dont smoke, never did. But my dad recently had to so felt like the right thing to base a picture off.

It is a good idea for a picture :) Good luck to your dad I quit 3 years ago and still find I look for one every so often.

he’d been smoking for 43 years and had a mild stroke while i was away in Germany a few months ago. So he had to quit. Since then it just seems like something i’ve a little more interest in, i’d like to make an anti smoking campaign poster, i’m working on some ideas at the minute.

agree with Connie, I prefer first effort, with the cig pack and lighter a little more focused, at 1/200sec you should be able to wind it back to get more dof, how about a close up an ashtray full of used cig butts ( with a little smoke effect) in place of the broken cigs, with an old persons hand/ fingers stubbing out a full / broken cig in the middle of the ash tray …. with caption “its never too late to break the habit”, if your Da gave them up after 43 years, best of luck to him… I never touched them, so its only a idea.
    cheers

thats actually along the lines of what i was thinking, just working on getting it set up to actually snap a shot for it. have a few ideas knocking about. I’ll attempt a retake of the first shot again tomorrow i just got carried away earlier on with new set ups.
thanks for all the advice and ideas :)
