Great composition on the second picture! Maybe a bit more contrast is needed (in my opinion). I would blame that on the time of the picture was taken, around noon perhaps?

ta, I’ve put a little contrast in it already. It was take a little after midday, maybe 1.30pm or so. What I was trying to get was the clearness of the water, but it didn’t come out as well as I’d hoped.

The ripples on the water will prevent you from seeing how clear it is. The best times to get shots like these (and pretty much any landscape) is at sunrise. Usually the water will be calm and you can get clear shots of the water.

The shot below was taken already after the sun was high, before this the fog was so dense you couldn’t see more than 5 or 6 ft in front of your nose. I arrived at Glendalough just before 6 Am as dusk was starting to break, but it was so foggy that only around 9AM could I get a shot out, this was it. The lake before this was completely still but here you can already see some ripples on the water, although you can still see the bottom rocks on the foreground.

    Thanks for the comment.

I take your point on Sunrise – there is a link on today’s telegraph of the best landscape photos of the year, as voted for by someone out there, and they are all pretty much taken just after sunrise (except for one very cool and kooky shot).

Didn’t know water would be more still in early morning, didn;t think it would make a difference……

    Again many thanks.
