Bokeh shapes

I would like to try making some custom apature shapes, to get shaped bokeh. I’ve been looking a videos on youtube, they all seem to f1.4 or f2.8. I was wondering if I can get the same quality of effect with f3, I’ve only recently bought a cannon 550d and only have one lens the 18-135 kit lens. Any advice is appreciated.
Dermot1Participantin short yes, you’re basically making a new aperture for your lens only it sits outside in front of the lens as opposed to inside it, you must make the shape you’re using smaller than the aperture in your lens. using your lens at 135 you need to know how small the aperture inside will be at f3, to find this out you need to know that a 50mm lens at f2 has an aperture of 25mm so the hole or shape you make has to be smaller than 25mm to achieve the effect your after, in your case we take the 135mm focal length and divide by the smallest aperture value f3 and get 45 so if you use lens at 135mm end of the range your hole/shape/new aperture must be smaller that 45mm across to achieve the effect. At 18mm end of your range you have the tricky job of making it 6mm, my head now hurts so I’ll leave you to figure out the math for the rest of the lens range, hope it helps and post some results if you get anything nice.
Jonnyp16vParticipantThanks for the info Dermot.
I made myself a lens cover in the shape of a heart, it was the easiest shape for the amount of space ( 24mm diameter ) I had using the 18-135 lens at f5.6 and 135.
My first attempts using street lights for the light sorces weren’t the best, but i’ll post them anyway to show the progress. I took the dog for a short walk earlier and got better results using the lights from castle street in bray (from a distance).1st attempts
todays
and the last one with flickr tint effect
Dermot1Participantas a bray man I can honestly say castle street has never looked nicer, good work and glad I could help.
Jonnyp16vParticipantPitmaticMemberjust about anything can be used to create custom bokeh I too have used a craft shape cutter from dunhelm to make a shape in a bit of card and taped to the front of my lens and got this result
now if you want to use really complex shapes this technique can be used with theatrical gobos check this out

Jonnyp16vParticipantPitmaticMembersorry should have said it was my nikon 50mm 1.4 AFD at 1.4 hope that helps
Dermot1Participanthere’s another option from the lovely people at photojojo I’ve been a subscriber to the newsletter they send out for a couple of years and this arrived this morning http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/bokeh-kit/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
gaffoParticipantyou can buy a kit from http://www.bokehmasterskit.com/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; – I have it – plenty of pre cut shapes great for this time of year especially with all the Christmas lights etc …. works best on a 50 1.8 or 1.4 they have some recommendations on the site
