Few pictures i took at the Bundoran Boxing Club fight night
it was my first time at attempting to take pictures at any sport really, I enjoyed it but found it very hard at the same time ;)
my camera is a sony a700 and the lenses i have so far are all kit lenses: 18 – 55 f3.5 / 5.6 or 70 – 210 f 4 /5.6 and last 50mm f1.8
i decided to mount the 50mm f1.8 as i thought i wasn’t gonna be able to use the flash, however once the fights started i saw two photographers from the local paper flashing away so I tried taking pictures both ways.
where i didn’t use the flash iso was at 2000 with shutter speed at 250
when using the onboard flash some pictures where overexposed if the boxers where too close to me and sometimes the ropes were reflecting the light ruining the shot. another problem i found whit the flash was the recharging time which meant the camera wasn’t always ready to shoot.
in my opinion the ambient light had a better feel to the shot compared to the ones with flash.
apart from the technical issues, i also had to avoid getting kicked in the face when they were coming over my side, referee in the way always at the wrong moments.
this was only a community event and the majority of boxers where young kids which meant speed wasn’t the same as professional fighters.
I’m happy enough with few shoots useless to say that many where deleted straight away.. however i enjoyed and have learned a lot should i do this again. i would recommend the experience to anyone, at least is an excuse to get out and take few shots ;)
thanks for readingstevie glennMemberi like number 4. you can see them both with eyes closed and one get hit rite on the button.
i love take photos of sport but more so motorbikes something comeing past you at 100mph + is hard to get lol.
clami79Participantthanks stevie, yeah would like to give that a try too.. i suppose it all gets better with practice :)
MarkKeymasterGood set of photos in fairness. Boxing is something I’d love to shoot too.
Wonder what they’d be like in b+w ? Might add some grittiness to it. Just a thoughtclami79Participantyou’re 100 % right Mark, didn’t really have much time to mess around with them yet but tried some of the preset filter on lightroom and they change the mood drastically as well as b/w
if only the days had 48 hours.. ;)sean fMemberpaulParticipantA nice set there.
I’d say #2 is the best of the set.
Always had to shoot such action, especially when light isn’t the best.
damiendParticipantNot bad its a fun sport to shoot aint it but havnt shot one in ages and have no plans to shoot one again . On the flash issue Ireland is one of the few places that actually allows flash during a fight as Im sure you have seen on pro box on rte , and at the fights that you went to.. You are much better off just trying to shoot with the bad lighting and just getting used to it. The light never changes and after round one you should have a compo of shutter and aperture that works if you are struggling ffor a good shutter speed try and shoot at peak action or just under expose them by a full stop and you will be shooting 2.8 at 1600 the lens you want is whats called the knockdown lens a zoom from around 20mil to 80 or so its a one lens covers all type of sport
The shoot below is as it says Willie Big Bang Casey according tot he paper is inline for a world title shot….cant see him winning it myself but good luck to him
clami79Participantthanks for the comments guys,
this was a community event, it was set in an hotel and lighting wasn’t half as good as it would be on a professional boxing venue ;)
