Problem uploading RAW images
-
kerryanne67Participant
Hi – can someone please give me some advice? I have a Canon EOS 1000D and can take photos in JPEG and also JPEG + Raw etc etc but when I take any photos in JPEG + RAW the images upload from my Camera on to my PC as “IMG” files and my RAW software won’t open them as raw files. They will open in Photoshop ok (and also in Digital Photo Professional, the Canon programme for processing Raw photos) and the JPEG file will be called eg. IMG_1234 and the raw version of same photo will open as IMG_1234(96) which shows 2 photos have definitely been taken ok but why won’t the raw file open as raw?? When I open in Digital Photo Prof the photo will open ok but the tab for giving you all the options for processing a raw image is totally greyed out so it obviously isn’t recognising my photo as a RAW image. Is it something to do with the fact the photos are uploading as IMG files? Do I have to change any settings in my camera or is this something to do with the settings in my PC when it uploads the photos? I have also tried opening the image in Photoshop CS3 and “Save As” and selecting Photoshop Raw (*.RAW) but then it says “Some image data (eg. printer settings etc) can not be saved with this file format. Save anyway?” and if I say yes it doesn’t even give me the option to open that file then in Dig Photo Prof so it’s not recognising that format either. Anyone any ideas because this is so frustrating! :?
tsergairlMemberHi Kerryanne
I think U should read this as a first step to work with RAW files :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
regards
Chris
and RAW is not the type of file, RAW is a FORMAT (digital negative) of image, in the canon system raw files are saved as .cr2 or (older) .crw
anyway read the link first :-)kerryanne67ParticipantThanks for responding Chris. I’ve just read the link so I’ve a bit more understanding (I think! :? ) I’ve just taken another photo though with my camera set as RAW and when I copy it into my photo folder on the PC it is still coming through as an IMG image. Also took one in RAW + JPEG and the same they’ve come through as IMG_2344 and IMG_2344(2) – neither have the CR2 extension that you (and the Canon manual) say it will have so I’m not much further forward on that score, maybe I haven’t understood the link as well as I should have or is my camera/PC set up wrongly for handling photos? Sorry if this is a silly question… ;-)
brendancullenParticipantHi,
You need to get the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW that is compatibale (not all versions are) with your version of Photoshop. I wouldn’t be sure the lastest version is compatible with the RAW files captured on the 1000D….but you can research this on the Adobe site and the various versions of Camera RAW.
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3822
You will also need the Canon RAW codec for windows.
http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0039964.asp
In order to view CR2 (RAW) files in Windows Explorer as thumbnails – you may also need this.
If you have the latest version of Adobe camrea RAW – and you still cannot open CR2 files – you need to move up to CS4. No other option.
To bypass this – open the RAW files in the Canon software – do your raw adjustments – and safe out as a TIFF – then open in Photoshop.
There are a few RAW converter/editors that can be found . and many are free.

A final options is to convert the RAW file using a DNG converter.

I’d persit with this little challenge until you have cracked it – as RAW is best…by a mile.

PitmaticMemberI think if your an elements user you will also get updated adobe raw and its cheaper than full blown photoshop but check first.
tsergairlMemberKerry , if You want to understand “how it is work do like this:
– setup your camera to ONLY RAW (no any jpgs)
– take a picture
– download taken picture as IMG_xxxxxx.cr2 to your PC
– open DPP (original software delivered with camera)
– mark showed picture IMG_xxxxxx.cr2 (by one click with your mouse)
– go to menu: File/save as/
– select “jpg”
– press “savenow take a look on your hdd, u will have ANOTHER IMG_xxxxxx file with jpg extension
thats it, no more any philosophy :-)
RAW in canon is in cr2 or crw files , take a look on links which showed us Brendan,
or go to:
http://bibblelabs.com/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
to download different soft for raw files (but dpp is very good as well :-)good luck :-)

kerryanne67ParticipantHi everyone – thanks a million for taking the time to respond. Have tried downloading the latest Firmware and also latest Digital Photo Professional as recommended by the Canon help desk and still no further forward. Chris when I take a photo as only RAW, connect the camera to the PC and open the image – it still doesn’t open with any CR2 extension. I have just taken another 2 photos, one in JPEG + RAW and one in RAW only. I have just opened them directly from the camera (ie. haven’t copied them over to the computer yet in case it was the way my PC was pulling them through was the problem), the 2 thumbnails for the JPEG + Raw photo both show a smaller version of the photo as normal and if I right click on each photo then Properties both say each is IMG_5550 (neither have an extension) and both are “Image Format – JPEG Image”. The photo I took only in RAW doesn’t actually show a compressed version of the photo in the thumbnail for that photo and the Properties say it is “Image Format – Image File” and name of the photo is IMG_5551 (no extension). Canon say the IMG prefix is fine but they don’t seem to understand why no CR2 extension for the RAW photos. Anyhow this is probably too technical now for most people (well… me anyway :-( ) so Canon Help Desk say they have now taken the problem as far as they can and have escalated me to their “second line support” so I’m apparently going to get a call from them within 3-5 days. Really want to push to get this sorted but it’s getting frustrating now!! Anyhow thanks everyone for taking the time to respond, I really do appreciate it. Hopefully I’ll get this sorted soon. Happy New Year everyone!
tsergairlMemberHI KerryAnne
You know, every doctor tell You that “is very difficult to treat a patient at a distance” :-)
What kind of system do U use ??
Maybe somebody from our forum lives near you, i think that the best resolution when somebody more experince will look at Your home on Camera and PC :-)Chris
kerryanne67ParticipantHi Chris – I live in Lifford, Donegal so not sure if anyone close or not. When you say what system – do you mean Windows? I have Windows XP, use Photoshop CS3, Digital Photo Professional, Photomatix, various Topax progammes and probably a few others so I have enough programmes – I think it might be the way the camera has been set up. If there is anyone in the Tyrone/Donegal area I would certainly travel with the laptop and camera if they thought they might suss the problem. Anyway, at this moment I’m waiting on Canon to call me back so I’ll bide my time till then – would be handy if they could log in online to my PC with the camera linked up and sort the problem but that’s probably not possible, a girl can always dream!! ;-) Anyhow, hopefully will get this sorted shortly. Thanks so much for your efforts though and for taking the time to try and sort my problem, I really appreciate it. :-)
