Lime Drop

    Hi all,

Day 1 of my 365 project. The shot was taken with my Nikon D700 using my 24-70 2.8 and I used an Nikon SB900 strobe to light the shot. I had a LumiQuest Softbox III attached to the SB900 to make the light wrap around the subject. The SB900 was positioned slightly to the left of camera and above the subject pointing downwards. I used the onboard flash on my D700 as the commander flash to fire the SB900. I also used a remote chord to focus fire the shutter on my camera. Kind of essential if you are trying to fire your camera while your other hand is dropping a piece of lime into a glass of water.

It took a good few attempts to get the timing right but overall I’m pleased with the results. I could have introduced another strobe to fill some of the shadows at the based of the glass but there’s 364 days left to try again and improve on this result. I used Aperture 3 to make some overall exposure adjustments to the shot and I used PhotoShop CS5 to clean some sensor dust that was clearly visible because of the small aperture I used f/22. Looks like its time to clean my sensor!

    Shot details as follows: f/22, 1/250, 48mm, ISO 200

    Hi Stephen,
I am surprised no one has commented on this, I like the simplicity of it though I am
sure there was little simplicity in executing it  It is nice and sharp as lime should
be I suppose :) but I think the background colour fights with it a bit, colour wise. I
think this would look great on a white background though maybe you wanted to get
    away from white?

Anyhow I like it and well done.

    Hi Shutterbug,

I agree with you about the subject fighting with the background. White would have been better alright, but as you say I wanted to do something a little bit different. I took a lot of shots to get it to the point its at and the glass is still not as defined as I would like it. Looking at it again I think I may have been a little heavy handed with the sharpening as well.

    Thanks for the feedback.
