10-22 Vs 17-55mm for Landscape?
-
Mardai24Participant
Hi, I’m just beginning to wake up to Landscape photography. I live in a gorgeous part of the world (Skerries) with plenty of gorgeous opportunities for this type of shooting. I’m looking to buy a lens that will do the landscape justice. Obviously, one with IS would be preferred, but given costs etc., I’m probably looking at something second hand. So, which to go for? Both my husband and I enjoy Landscape photography – he would be going with the 10-22mm and I am steering very severly towards the 17-55mm. We would have funds for only one. Which one? All our gear to date is Canon, so something that will work with the 450D and 50D.
Once we have the information to make the informed choice, does anyone know of any good, secure sites where we might look to purchase something second hand? Or anywhere in Ireland that might do some good deals?
Cheers,
Mary
ps. really enjoying browsing the forums. Thanksossie13ParticipantHi Mary don’t forget to check out the “Equipment for sale” section on this site!!
brownieParticipantHi Mary,
If landscape photography is your No.1 well I would definately go for the 10-22mm Canon…I use one on a Canon 7D and as it has
a 1.6 crop factor it gives a wide angle of 16mm or thereabouts…using a 17-55mm would give a crop factor of nearly 27mm…big
difference when you want to fit as much into the frame as possible.
Again if you doing mostly landscape I would say use a tripod and for that reason you would not need an image stabilised lens anyway.
The Canon 10-22mm is a really lovely lens and gives some great effects when used close in on foreground interest subjects.Hope this advice helps.

MFlemingParticipantWhy not go for something like a Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM, it would be ideal for landscapes, it has both a decent wide view and a average zoom, best of both worlds.
Mardai24ParticipantThanks for all the help. I do appreciate all the advise. I’m keeping an eye out and only beginning to get going on Landscape photography. I’m also new to Photography Ireland, about 1 week now and I have to say I’m really enjoying it. Thanks again.
stewart kennyMemberim a huge fan of the 10-22mm but finding filters can be hard…or at least expensive, bear that in mind if its being used primarily for landscape, you will need a a filter system such as the cokin xpro or similar to stop vignetting on the lense:)

damien.murphyParticipantHi Mary,
I would recommend checking out the type of landscape shots you would like to take, and see what focal length’s were used to get the shot. Most landscape photographers shoot landscapes with wide angle lenses, normal lenses and telephoto lenses depending on what type of images they are trying to capture.
The wide angle zoom seems to have become universally tagged the ‘landscape lens’ by folks, but this is often no more true than the moderate telephoto being tagged the ‘portrait lens’. Wide’s lend themselves to vistas and near-far compositions, with normal’s providing images akin to the perspective people normally perceive with, and telephoto’s being useful for isolating compositions and compressing perspective.
Also, bear in mind most landscape shots are made with lenses stopped down quite a bit for depth-of-field reasons anywhere from f8- f22, where most lenses performance is indistinguishable from others.
Good luck with the search. Re: places to buy, the classifieds here on PI are recommended. Bermingham Cameras and Conns Cameras both maintain used equipment stocks also, and may provide peace of mind if you are unaccustomed to buying on the used market.
..and welcome to PI, by the way :)
Green MeanieParticipantHi Mary,
Have a look at my 10-22 I have for sale here
canon-ef-s-10-22-f-3-5-4-5-usm-lens-t42563.html
It was with Canon for a repair but as anyone who has spent the € to send a lens to Canon will tell you it’s like new. Great lens but landscapes are a very small part of what I shoot so I got a 17-40 which was more useable day to day.
Could link to some images I took with it if you like.
Thanks,
John,
