First camera advice, Canon550D? Do’s and Don’ts?
-
DepthOfFeelParticipant
So I am pretty new to the world of DSLRs. Have dabbled using a canon 400d just to see whether it would be worth getting myself a proper camera and have decided to make the plunge into the world of photography.
I have my eye on a canon 500d and have read countless reviews and it seems to be pretty good. BUT as I am completely new to the whole thing what sort of elements should I be looking for?
I would ideally like a camera that integrates photography with HD video, to a pretty high standard.
For a beginner would this camera be a bit overkill?
Plus how should I decide whether to go for canon or nikon? Will jessops let me try both?I have also decided on this camera because I presume if I completely dont take to it all I the cam will have a pretty good resale price.
Mainly what should I be looking for in terms of spec with a camera, at this point I am not going to be using this mainly for any sole type of photography i.e sports or nature purely. Thanks in advance
edg3ParticipantWell i have a 550D an upgrade from my old 450D and i have to say you really notice the difference. the 18megapixel sensor really does pay for itself and well work investing in. Its basically an advanced amateur to pro camera. Or so my magazine said in the reviews i read before i bought it.
The video, i cant comment on because i’ve never used it but i’ve been told its good.
If you already have a Canon and lenses it’d be smart to stay with them and just use your old lenses with it. I originally had a Canon 1000F film camera with a 28-70 (or something) lens and ended up using it for months with the 450 and 550 before dropping it!
I think spending anything over a grand for a beginner is over kill. I picked up my 550D for 750 with a kit 18-55mm IS lens. Its not dropped to just under 700euro on the site i use. Its an amazing camera so if your looking to upgrade i’d say go with it and enjoy :) The closest thing to a 550D is a D90 but the canon has a faster AF and larger image size so the quality is better though the Nikon as the better optics over all the 550D is better.
Hope that helps a little :)DepthOfFeelParticipantGreat, that sound promising!
Have read endless reviews and watched numerous videos but you can’t beat hearing some first hand experience.I don’t own any canon gear myself but have the option of getting a lend of some lenses from a buddy, so this alone is stearing me towards the canon. Don’t know whether this is a clever thing or not?
Have seen an awful lot of these or the Kiss X4, as I have seen it been called, on sale on ebay for round the £500 mark. I presume the 550d and the Kiss X4 are the same camera only with an alternative name?
Also, the ebay seller known as ‘digigood’ who seem to deal quite heavily in selling on this camera, any info on them? Would it be safe to assume given the strong positive rating and consistent selling of the item that it is a reliable source? Just incase on the off chance there are counterfeits or a well known defect in these and I am naive to the issue

I hate ebay, i’ve had some horrible dealings with them, especially directly with them and getting money back on charges they took off me when they shouldnt have! but thats just me. I’ve never heard of Kiss X4 as being another name for the 550D but maybe its the US name, like the 450D being the Rebel Xi or something along those lines.
I love my 550D and i rarely go anywhere without it. I got a grip, 2 batteries and a cable release from the US for about 80euro with import tax so if your willing to hunt you’ll find some excellent stuff for it.
As for ebay i dunno what kind of warranty that guy will realistically offer you, if its brand new it should be covered by canons warranty but then again you dunno if its been registered already etc. though the name digigoods sounds familiar to me :)
I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide to do :)DepthOfFeelParticipantI studpidly forgot to even consider what sort of warrenty would be offered through that seller!
Will definately check that out.Im lead to believe it is a US name like the ‘Rebel’ tag, thought I may aswell throw it out there though incase it could have been a different model entirely.
Thanks, going to do a bit more research then build up the courage to part with my cash!
edg3Participantwarranty is very important. I had my 550D 2 months when a button on the back stopped working. I contacted canon and they told me i’d have to send it to england, which would have cost me a fortune. Luckily i rang back and got in contact with a much nicer more helpful support guy and he told me there was a company in dublin, who, if i brought them my camera plus a copy of the receipt they would return it for me, free of charge and then hold if for me til i could pick it up after the repair. it was gone a week and a half before they called and told me it was ready for pick up. I was busy that week so they held if for 5 more days til i got it.
Warranty may never be needed but you can never know.Rebel was the US name for the 450D but i find some sellers (especially in england and eastern europe) call it that to to try and convince people its a better or slightly different/upgraded model of a 450D i had one seller tell me it had a better sensor then the 450D normal and was weather sealed to… so… i dont trust ebay sellers :)
