    HI all,

Took this while out walking near the Mardyke in Cork City. I really like it and would like to know what you all think so C&C please.

    Thank you,

    Kev.

Kevin, it’s a nice photo but I think it would be better without the tree and branches. Also the sky above the building in the top of the image looks too bright and could do with being darken by a stop or two. The building certainly looks like an interesting subject.

    Cheers for that Dave,

Ya I totally agree about the trees and branches but there was no way round then, unless I found a boat somewhere. I see what you mean about the colour of the sky above the building, but feel is works well in the reflection in the water. And I guess there’s no way of changing one without the other.

The building itself is the Tyndall Institute which is part of UCC here in Cork.

Some more suggestions I’d like to add in something like this is an exposure gradient to reduce the sky’s brightness but not the reflected portion (the water naturally aborbs/reduces light levels). In software terms, that would mean a Graduated Filter in Lightroom or the equivalent in Photoshop etc! possibly 2/3rds or 1stop of a reduction from midway to the top.

The other suggestion is to avoid over-saturation of the colours if something is strongly lit or a vibrant colour like the bricks on the side and is being lit by sunset (red-tinted light). This can also be handled in software effectively if there is minimal ‘damage’ in the source photo.

If you want any help at all in the software or post-processing side of things, I’d be only too happy to show you through a few techniques/tools that would be very useful in many situations.
