Hi,
Im selling my 450d and 18-55 kit lens, and will need a new wide angle,
I do a bit of portraiture and alot of sport, I feel I will a new wide angle cause the smallest I will have will be 50mm 1.8..I was wondering should I go for the 10-20mm cause i can get great effects at sport like motocross at 10mm and can get a big family portrait in aswell ..? Would it be suitable for both?
If anyone has this lens and can report some feedback that would be great.
comments back will be much appreciated
Jayo
Green MeanieParticipantI had a Canon 10-22 Efs for a while and it is seriously wide and you will need to be dangerously close to get any wide action shots, even allowing for the 1.6 crop if that’s a factor for you. That said static stuff, like around a paddock you will see with freash eyes, looking to get down low with the camera at every opportunity.
For portraits beware of putting any sensitive people at the side as they will turn out a bit chubby
Sure look what it did to the good looks of my Busa
In the end I got a 17-40L for the wider side, like you the next widest thing I have is a fast fifty. Ultrawides are a bit specialised and fun but I haven’t the room or money for that plus a standard zoom.

flemoParticipantCheers John for the reply..
Yea I see what ya mean. The 17-40 f4 was goin to be my other option. But I do Love the wide angel effect would get some mint shots.
But I feel the 17-40 would be the better option in the long run. Ahh decisions
do you have any more photos on your site taken with the 10-20 ?
jayo.
Green MeanieParticipantNo bike shots really as I found it too short for the road racing stuff and too slow around the paddock as I don’t own a flash. Alot of the photorally album were shot using the 10-22 and some of the landscape stuff.

John.BMParticipantThe Sigma 10-22 is the standard lens for landscape photographers with a crop sensor body. It’s a great lens for providing sharp images front to back.
For sports, I thought you would have needed longer reach and wider aperture to give good background blur.
