While you have a dramatic looking shot, I find that the church tower in leaning backwards takes from from it. I assume you were using a very wide angle lens and while this will capture everything you might need it also distorts some aspects. I also feel that you could have excluded that concrete block in the foreground.
I like this Fergus … the HDR is subtle and works well here …
I find the church a little too central tho … I’d like to see it a bit closer, off centre to give the eye the opportunity to take in that lovely sky as well…
Tex: Yes, lens was set to 17mm (FF). The church is on a mound and the land all around it falls away rapidly so the camera was well below the floor level of the church which probably didn’t help with the distortion. The ‘concrete block’ is actually a lone headstone which I had hoped would add some fg interest but I can see how you see it as a block. To be honest, I think I should have cloned out the white floodlights!
Pippatee: You are right about the subject being very central. Ideally, I wanted the church L shape to be offset and lying on a vertical and horizontal third line but there were too many distractions outside the frame on both sides. I tried just cropping to offset the church but ended up losing too much sky.
Thank you both very much for taking the time to view and comment – much appreciated!
