This is a lovely scene but the lighting conditions don’t IMO seem very favourable.
Shooting toward the sun with probably one of the auto modes set, the camera controls
the exposure.
With a very bright sky then neither the sky, the land or the sheep is IMO properly exposed.
The final result is a bit grey and muddy.
I think this is a difficult scene to get a good exposure because if you expose for the lower
half the sky will be too bright and if you expose for the sky the land and the sheep will
be underexposed.
Maybe if you included less sky in the frame you would have lessened the problem.
As always these are just my personal opinions and intended to help rather than criticise.
Nice scene, but would definitely call for usage of a flash unit as a primary light perhaps, and a tighter shot! a backlit 90% white animal is always going to be tough without additional light sources.
Hi guys, thanks for the comments one and all. I take them all on board. I agree the framing could be tighter, it doesn’t need all that sky; however I do like the rolling clouds just over the horizon. Also, i should have kneeled down to take the shot as i think there is too much road in it. Personally though I quite like this shot. I like the silhouetted effect of the mountains, and to a lesser extent of the sheep and the walls. Also I like the the lack of colour, that its nearly all grey with a splash of green. But, if the wider view is that it doesn;t work then it probably doesn’t work. And no doubt there are a few basic errors in the way the shot was taken. And I’m glad to get the feedback.
