Canon G12 Camera Or Fujifilm F550

    Hi Guys

Its being a while since i was here. I need a little help deciding the best value for money camera between the Canon g12 and fuji f550. They will be used as underwater cameras. Both have similar prices underwater housings although he G12 has a more expensive one rated for 60m, a little bit out of my range and fuji Ireland say there isnt one for the f550 but its listed on the main fuji website (part no WP FXF500)

I know the Fuji is cheaper but i regard value for money as the getting the best use of it. Both have RAW mode, Fuji has a New CMOS sensor over the canons CCD which i probably wont see any difference. Ive done a good bit of review searching but its down to the nitty gritty now. I originally asked for advise on an SLR here but opted to stay with my Fuji S7000 and use more of the manual controls and look into an advanced compact to use above and below the water.

Anyway advise is required to help me choose the right model.

    Thanks

I have zero idea about underwater photography.

    But I’d try some of the diving forums. http://wetpixel.com/forums/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

    Google for: underwater photography

    Hi Malcolm,

The casing/ camera housing is often the most expensive item with regard to underwater shooting, and would start there and work your way back. If it was me, I would be looking for some sort of backward compatibility of the casing, so perhaps after the G12/ F550, you will be able to use the camera with future models of camera without having to buy a whole new casing, which are not cheap.

Re: cameras themselves, can’t give too much advice re: best models for underwater shooting, but perhaps as Ted suggests you may find utility in some of the dedicated underwater forums out there, should none of our users here be able to advise.

On a somewhat related note, you may be able to get a good deal on an underwater Nikonos (Nikon’s underwater camera range) these days, if you are prepared to deal with film.

Best of luck in whatever you choose, and look forward to seeing some of your shots! :)

    Thanks guys..

Good idea about choosing the right housing. I normally keep my cameras for a long time unless i loose them :( so there will become well used.
I’m currently using my wifes ixus 980. Some of my pics are here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150118302979775.293216.517134774&l=73ef952df0″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; . I basically shoot with camera only. I have no attachments yet.
I need my own camera cause the last thing you want to do is flood or loose your wifes camera.

I made a post in wetpixel but got no response. I’ll go chat the friendly camera shops too. I did look at the Nikon P7000 but that casing is very expensive compared to the canon and the fuji.

    Malcolm,

I have decided upon the F550 EXR which I have on order and anxiously awaiting its arrival.

I include a link to a side by side comparison on dpreview of the G12 and F550 EXR not sure if you have seen this or not. Hope it is of help…

    Hi Niall

I only get this message now as i was away on holidays.

How did you get on with the F550. I decided to go with the G12. The main reason being i read that some of the lenses were a little faulty and Fuji were repairing them rather than giving users a new camera. With the cameras being so close i wanted the stability of solid camera so didn’t want to risk any slight fault.

I haven’t got an underwater housing yet. That’s next on my list.

Enjoy the cam cause it looks like a great one and its a shame i moved from fuji but the canon also allowed me to combine the flash with the G12 and my next purchase, a new Dslr.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Malcolm
