Hairy GusParticipant
this is my first attempted at a B&W portrait, so as always C&C very much welcomed
Regards Gus
tsergairlMemberHI Gus
I think the contrast is too low and picture should be sharper, and the crop is a little to center, can I put my vision here ?Chris
Hairy GusParticipantThanks for th C&C chris, I’ll have a mess around with it in PS and see what i can do.
I would love to see your vision of it…Regards Gus
Hairy GusParticipantHI I got a chance to work on it but not sure if I went to far. What do you think?
Regards Gus

I like that a lot Chris, I can definitely see the differences. CHEERS…
thank You :-)
Hairy Gus wrote:
How do you make it sharper?
The only way I know is the sharpen filter on PS.– filter > sharpen > unsharp mask

Had another bash, still need to work on sharpening…

tsergairlMemberHi Gus
Is much better now, but U see this photo is still blurred because was taken like this, i dont see any details of this pic for example, what shutter speed was used to take this photo , what focal, ISO etc, can You put these details?
Chris
Hairy GusParticipantCheers again Chris. I know it’s not perfect but I can’t believe how a few small steps can improve an image so much, really have to get my head around photoshop.
I have only had a DSLR two months so It’s all very experimental.
Canon 450D with 50mm 2.5 (compact macro)
the image was taken at f4.5, 1/13sec, ISO 200 and focal length 35mm
I am still struggling, but slowly starting to get my head around it I manly shoot in Aperture Priority mode and dabble in manual now and again, lots of learning to do…Regards Gus
tsergairlMemberwell well well :-), now we’ve got an answer what is wrong with the picture :-D :-)
the answer is 1/13 sec :-)now, take the same model :-) , with the same room conditions, use this parameters:
f4.5,
1/50sec
ISO 800now, this is a viewfinder from 450:
set up exactly the same focusing point as you see on the pic above :-) and as a target with this point take a LEFT EYE of Yours model
and show as again :-)and one more question for ya :
How did you get “focal length 35mm” on prime 50mm lens? ;-) ;-) :-)
Hairy GusParticipantSorry my bad must have had the kit lens on (18-55mm)
So under the same conditions I would need to bump up the ISO and shutter speed.
I nearly always use the center AF point, I will try experiment with others.
Some times I think I’ll never get my head around it all, but hay it’s early days.Regards Gus
phillipMemberhi gus
if i was you i would use your 50mm macro lens, far sharper than the kit lens, for your canon 450 setup, for good portrait use either a large window or patio cover with white bed spreed or something to cover the opening, this will defuse the light for you. now on you camera set it to M, set shutter to 50, set aperture to wide open. ie 1.8 or .2.8, use selective focusing to focus on eyes, set iso to auto for starting out, take some test shots, review the shots, keep for iso below ISO 800 this will give you less grain.hope this helps
chris photo edit, is over sharpened, but thats the case when you try to save a shot, better off doing it again, its a learning curve we all have to do, and thats why this form is all about to give advice and help out
