First Wedding……. (Updated with pics)

CocobearParticipant
Hi All,
Thanks for reading my post ! I have my first wedding Saturday week, very nervous & excited at the same time….
Just wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom. I am shooting the wedding for a friend for free to build up, well start really my wedding portfolio. I have done two rec-ci missions to the locations, Howth Church & the Hotel is in Portmarnock. I have put together a shot list with back up suggestions for a dum, dum, dum…rainy day and the bride is very happy with my plans.
Gear wise I will be using two D200’s with a Sigma F2.8 18-50 on one and a Sigma F2.8 50-150 on the other. I will have a Nikkor 50mm F1.8 and a Nikkor 85mm F1.8 with me as back ups. Flash wise I will have an SB-900 with me. I’ve been to the church at a similar time of day and with the meter readings I think I can pull it off without using flash.
The last thing in the world I want to be is one of the cowboys people refer to, but we all have to start somewhere. Any thoughts or tips would be great. I have done alot of wedding shoot research online and I have a check list to go through for the days and hours coming up to the wedding itself….
Thanks again for reading,
Linda
WestburyMemberWell, I’m not really in a position to offer advice but I read somewhere recently “F8 and BE THERE”
Best of luck!!
shutterbugParticipantGood luck Linda, you sound like you have put in the ground work, and you will be fine I
am sure. Do you have someone helping you out? I would imagine getting everyone
organised into different shots would be easier with two, and maybe a spare pair of
hands for off flash or reflector shots?Keep calm and enjoy it :)
CocobearParticipantHi Westbury, Thanks for the tip… I think :)
Hi Jenny, My husband is coming with me & going to help with the rounding up and he is well used to holding a reflector :). We know alot of the brides family so thats going to help alot. The Church grounds in Howth are lovely so I am going to try get the must have’s out of the way there before everyone disperses. It also has a great balcony inside so after I get the Bride & Groom coming down the aisle I am going to get them to stop at the end of the pews and I can run upstairs to take the group shot, captive audience so to speak :)
Really looking forward to it now, can’t wait to get stuck in. Hopefully I’ll get some shots good enough to post up here for c&c, fingers crossed.
Ta,
Linda
WestburyMemberCocobearParticipantHi Westbury !!
Thanks so much for remembering :) Well 973 photos later I came out alive !!! I really enjoyed it and I had nerves at the start but when i got into it I was flying. I learnt lots. I had the two D200s on the go and unfortuately I didn’t get to F8, not enough light even at 1600 ISO to go any more than F3.6 …. I am happy with what I got, there are some I don’t have that I wish I had. I wish I had been more forcefull, the couple wanted to get the photos over as quick as possible so I don’t have a huge range of variations on the posey ones. Next time I’ll be more forcefull on that front. I had good feedback from other guests. So hopefully the couple will be happy with what I’ve got. I’m trying to whittle it down to 200 pics or so now for post processing and hopefully I’ll have 100 that I am satisfied with to give to them. I’ll post up some of my favourites for C&C when I get that far :) I know they aren’t prize winners but we all start somewhere, so hopefully this is a good foundation for onwards and upwards :)
Oh another thing I learnt was to check that there isn’t a locked door half way up the stairs leading to the gallery that you want to take the group shot from ;)jodal1975Participantglad it all went well :-) seems like you coped with the pressure ! looking forward to seeing a few pics.
climberhuntParticipantGood to see it went well, Linda. The first wedding can be very nerve-wracking. Sounds about the right amount of shots as well :)
Looking forward to seeing a few samples here ;)
Rgds,
Dave.MarkKeymastertrueblueMemberWell done on your first wedding. Delighted everything went ok. Looking forward to seeing some shots.
Gone2themoonParticipantcongrats on your maiden voyage.
A bit late for advice but I found that a couple of alarms set on the phone served as a good reminder as to when to leave for the brides place, when to leave for the church, when to expect the bride, etc.
Lots to think about on the day beside timing!Lists also helped me.
List of gear to bring, list of thing to do with gear, list of things to ask couple before hand, list of shots, etc.
These lists can be printed and checked off, and of course added to.Best wishes
IanCocobearParticipantHi All (Again),
Well here they are a few tasters. C&C welcome……fingers crossed !!
shutterbugParticipantWell done Linda, you must be pleased you have the 1st one under your belt :)
I really like the shot of the bridesmaids with the lights behind them, though maybe
having the bride in the centre of them would have been better, but it does have
a candid feel to it which is nice.Semmick PhotoParticipantHI Cocobear,
Very brave doing a wedding. Its something that you cant mess up ;-) I wouldn’t have the guts, to be honest.
Questions: is that last picture compressed or is it the original? It has JPEG compression artefacts.
Also, on that last picture, you could use a different technique. Use the flash but decrease the shutter speed. That way your object is well lit and sharp, but the ambient light is also captured and it creates a realistic atmosphere and shows movement of dancing people.

WestburyMemberWell done Linda, Looks like you did a good job and the couple should be very happy. Looks like you used natural light most of the time which is also my preferred route. I might advise to brighten up the images a bit more in post as I think it makes wedding images look happier or something.;) Also here is a great blog with tonnes of info to check out. I learned a lot from it myself.http://neilvn.com/tangents/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; Well done again!
