Great capture Enda. How on Earth did you manage to get so close to him? They are usually very wary.

thanks miki.300mm lens and well cropped.they usually face down into the fork of the tree and i had pre focused were his head is with space above for the rest of the body, but he choose to feed this way so he ended up in the bottom left hand corner of the shot with most of the body missing.

Great shot Enda.Plenty of patience required. There are plenty of reports and sightings of Pine Martens down this end of the country recently.

thanks for comments everyone.Charles,im no expert on flash photography so perhaps someone else could explain the best way to light this type of shot.but the way i done it was to step out the distance from hide to tree then at home experiment with similar tree and dark coloured childs toy placed in tree, obviously pre focus before dark on the spot you expect the subject to be.

Thats how I light the badgers. It can be tricky though. I use two flashes one either side of the camera, one slightly higher and the other lower than the camera. I’m happy once I dont get harsh distracting shadows or red eye. You did a good job here. Trying out different set ups before hand is the key and pre focusing manually is a must in the dark as AF assist isn’t great. The downside is that you have to have the animal in the right place so I use a high f stop (F11) for more DOF and of course food to bait them in.
