Motorsport shooting advice

    Hi

I am shooting with an EOS500D and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens. I have been told that Tv mode is best for shooting motorsport, and have seen some mentions of Av on here as well. Can someone please advise me on what would be best, I plan to photograph a rally tomorrow, the last time I just used the sports mode but am hoping for better results this time. Thanks for any help

I have never shot motor sport so probably pinch of salt needed! I do however
try to get flying birds which can be pretty fast too  I would use shutter priority
setting my speed to 800 to 1000 of second and adjust the ISO to get the aperture
that you want. For instance I would be using a 300mm lens with a 2x converter set to 1/800s f11 ISO 640
this gives me enough depth of field to cover the area that the bird might fly into.

With cars it will be a little easier as you can predict what path the car will take (hopefully)
you can probably get away with f5.6 so ISO value can be kept lower (all depending on light or course)
Continuous shutter, and maybe spot focus. I am sure there are better informed than me on the
site which might step in? As I am probably talking rubbish

I do a good bit of motorsport. Im no pro but might be helpful. The setting depends on the shot you want to achieve. I use av if i want to freeze the picture like a head on shot or so like this

To freeze the photo you want a shutter speed of around 1/500 so just see what the camera sets it to when you focus on something. If its too low increase your Iso.Also I use Ai servo for moving subjects because the camera is always focusing as you follow the subject

If you want to get movement into the photo or panning i change the mode to TV and set my shutter around 1/200 and work my way down. The lower the shutter speed the more movement in to the photo.
