Which film for a wedding

    Hi guys,

I’m doing a friends wedding later this summer, the booked photographer seems to have disappeared, I’ve never done one before so hence I’m after advice, what do you think would be the best film to use, I’m hoping to do both B&W and colour and will be using 35mm, I was thinking Fuji 160 for the colour and Kodak Tmax 400 for B&W, any advice, oh! and filters what should I use for the B&W film, white dress and all that.

    Thanks

    RF.

The New Kodak Portra 400 is getting very good reviews. I’ve just ordered a few rolls from 7dayshop. I would suggest shooting the whole lot in colour and worry about the black and white later. Take a look at the New Kodak Portra 400 flickr group for samples.

Film advice aside. I would always recommend getting a professional to do a wedding. There’s just too much that can go wrong, especially if you are shooting on film and have no way of checking that all your equipment is functioning correctly. Good luck either way.

Yes the new Portra films are getting good reviews. I’d probably agree that using colour only and converting later for any B&W pics will save you hassle on the day, unless you have two cameras or can borrow a second?

Hi Red fox, I used the old portra 400vc and thought it was one of the best out there but can’t say the same about the new one I tried it out and nothing so far has impressed me, I’d stick with the fuji but you will need two cameras so better stick with converting,

I would suggest you use the same speed film for both colour and b&W to avoid any confusion on metering. I would not use any filters on the B&W portrait tyoe shots, maybe bring a yellow filter if you get to take the couple in a nice landscape setting . Do plan your shots in advance of the day by visiting the Church and Hotel in advance to search out locations to use. have fun.

I know nothing about film, but from the ISO/ASA side of things I’d go higher than 160. unless you have some nice glass.
    Best of luck with it.

I just got kinda good news, looks like they got a pro and I’m off the hook, still like the idea all the same so I might just tag along and do a little bit of experimenting seeing as I’m not under as much pressure,

Thanks for all the help lads. :D

Thats good, you’ll still be able to take photographs without the pressure of being the main photographer.
