Wheels in Motion

I’m working away on my AIPF panel. Panel title will be called “Motion”. I’d really appreciate your thoughts on this one….and is it worthy as a panel image.
Its a wheel detail from the RPSI’s steam locomotive 186 at it leaves Wicklow Town Station on Sun 7 Aug 2011. i was about 5 feet from the tracks hidden behind a power unit. Train was doing perhaps 40mph.

5faytheParticipantHi Brendan,
I have no experience whatsoever with regard to panels so I can’t really help there.
Overhearing club members who have gone through the process I think things have
to be spot on technically and that the images should gel as a collection.I do know that what one person thinks is a wonderful image another might
think that its not so good.I’m not sure this is an abstract image but it definitely shows motion.
I personally don’t find it to be an outstanding image but as I mentioned earlier
these things can be a matter of taste.I’m not being much help but I am hoping that my reply might result in members who
are more experienced at this type of thing replying to your question.Cheers,
John.
markclehaneParticipantHi Brendan,
Like John, I’m not sure I’m really qualified to say whether it’s up to AIPF standards or not, but I can give you my own opinion on it, which hopefully will be constructive critisism.
The 2 things that struck me initially were firstly, there seems to be a slight curve on the foreground track. At first I thought it might have been an optical illusion because of the wheel but after placing a grid over it in PS, it’s definitely barrelling a little.
Secondly, I think I would have cleaned up the few marks on that same rail, especially the white one on the far right. Maybe I’m being too picky but I’d imagine it certainly wouldn’t harm the image.
Also, on my screen it looks a tad grey. I personally would prefer a bit more contrast but that’s subjective I suppose.
Anyway, unusual image – Best of luck with the panel :D
MarktexMemberBrendan I’m not convinced that your picture conveys a sense of motion. I think panning your camera as the train passed might have given you a more effective result. But as part of a panel it might fit right in. I would have to see the entire layout of your panel to be able to give a definite judgement. I was at the panels competition earlier this year and thought the standard required for an AIPF was very high and there were several rejections that surprised me.
