Off camera flash query

Hi, I have a Canon EOS 7D and have just bought an off the camera flash for it (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; … ss_product) and whilst it works fine when it is on the camera both using the remote release or just pressing the button on the camera – but how do I get it to work in sync once I take it off the camera? I either use the 2 second timer or my remote release (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; … =JAQCfVfm3) when I’m taking photos but once the flash is not on the camera it doesn’t work. What am I doing wrong or do I need some other gadget to make it work? On the Amazon reviews people have said that the flash works well in “Slave” mode which I’m assuming is when it’s off the camera but what do I need to do that? Any ideas? :?
brendancullenParticipantThe amazon link is incomplete – so can you reply with the flash model you got – and i’ll see if i can answer you. bren
shutterbugParticipantSome flashes need a second flash to trigger it, ie the on board camera flash or alternatively a
cord from your camera to the flash, it may not support wireless flash?Green MeanieParticipantAssuming that the flash model in in question you need to go into the settings on the 7D and enable the built in flash as a wireless flash. You can have it that bothe will fire or just the off camera flash.
Have a look at the below link

phillipMemberwireless flash is built in to your canon 7d read your manual, you must have a compatible flash gun, e.g canon speedlite 430II or 580II for it to work, now some will work with infrared or some work with a flash from a master flash either on camera or off camera. if you bought the YN 460 from YONGNUO then set it to slave 1 or 2, pop open you flash on camera, slave 1 will fire on any flash given from your pop up flash, slave 2 will ignore any pre flash and only fire main flash when fired.
YONGNUO will be releasing a new flash YN 565 soon, which will be compatible with the 7d wireless trigger and TTL
hope this helpsphillip
phillipMemberalso, when you have your YONGNUO flash gun off camera, the flash gun will have to be set manually as it will not support off camera TTL,
a good stating point for manual flash, is set you camera to “M”, dial in 250sec for shutter and F5.6 for aperture, and set flash to 1/4 power, test your shot, remember that you cant go higher than 250sec as this would be your sync speed of your camera,1.adjust for ambient light with the shutter, i.e slow down your shutter
2.aperture will control the flash exposure
3.Only increase your ISO if shutter gets to slow for hand holding.kerryanne67ParticipantThanks everyone for the very helpful advice – much appreciated.
Philip/Brendan, The flash I have is a a Yongnuo YN460-II speedlite (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0031YBKA6/ref=oss_product” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;). Philip I have just followed your instructions and it worked perfectly – great! Tried it in Slave 1 and 2 and again, it worked perfectly, also by using my Canon remote release. I would have had no idea about 250 sec being the max for my camera so thanks alot for that advice too.
Haven’t worked out how to use only the speedlite (ie. turning off the on-board flash) as it would appear to need the onboard flash to trigger the speedlite when off camera but perhaps there is a way – I’ll keep playing, hopefully it’s here somewhere in the manual.
Green Meanie, the link you sent was very helpful and I’ve just saved it for future ref – thanks alot too for that. :-)
Really appreciate you all taking the time to reply – thanks so very much!

kerryanne67Participantps: It’s the site here that is abbreviating the product description above, if you click on it tho it should connect you automatically
phillipMemberno worries kerry,
the YN 460 does not have wireless tech so the only way to trigger it off camera is using the pop up flash on your 7d, or you could buy some wireless triggers from amazon or ebay.phillip
kerryanne67ParticipantThanks alot Philip – you’re understanding of the tech info obviously alot better than mine! I will go check out wireless triggers now :-) Thanks alot!

Kerry-AnneThe on camera flash will fire so as to trigger the YN460 but fractions of a second before the shutter release so it won’t affect the exposure.
I also bought a YN460 and the wireless triggers I got 3 of the below Catuc V5’s and they work great. They are transceivers so they act as either transmitter or receiver.

Here’s one I took with the 7D YN460, 430exii and the wireless triggers for a photo rally.
kerryanne67ParticipantThanks alot Green Meanie – I have now bought the receivers/transmitters you suggested and they are working perfectly – thanks alot for that link – really appreciate the help as I am a bit clueless in that Dept! :-) Will be a while till I take photos as perfectly lit as your above (great shot!) but no excuses now lol ! Thanks a mill! Kerry
