Thats a fair price in my opinion. I have a feeling they were expecting you to do it for free as a friend so i wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks Ballyman. Anyone else have any views on the price??

Seems like very reasonable prices to me. The albums and 25 10×8 for €250 might even be too cheap.

Just as well you pushed for contact with the couple. Good lesson there for people I think.

Absolutely spot on with your prices…people are trying to make photographers feel that we should be glad of
the work (which we are) but not at knock down prices. All pros have dropped their prices in this recession and
are now providing great packages for couples but we need to make a living too…and yes…we do have a life as well
and staying out all night for speeches has to cost more in my eyes as well…you did nothing wrong at all…you
were reasonable in your approach and fair play to you….the price on the album would depend on what type etc.

very reasonable , bordering on cheap price as far as im concerned….like others have stated, i think the problem here is the couple thought they were getting a freebie or at least Heavily discounted price. they will realise the error of their ways when they price other photographers!!

I know a chap who charges in the region of €1500 for what you were doing for €750!

thats a very good price, I always think its not worth doing jobs for friends of the family etc.. because they always expect everything to be done for nothing I feel. I would actually feel that the extra price for the album and prints of €250 is very very cheap.

There are people quoting €100 for the same job as I quote €400, that does not mean they are doing the same thing as I do for 1/4 of the price. If it did mean that, I would not get any work.

Price varies on quality of product and on the value the person commissioning the work places on the quality.

Well worded Brian……..even though most wedding packages can be very similar looking, the detail is in the finished product.

I regularly meet couples in my studio/office where I have meetings over a tea/coffee whilst discussing their wedding day arrangements. While doing this, I show them before/after wedding images….before images are straight from camera, and after is when I have color corrected, brightened eyes/teeth, soften skin, reduced wrinkles, tucked in a bum, thinned out an arm……..and after they see this work, they don’t question my fee (which isn’t a lot more than what’s mentioned here). Although the output from all of these packages are very similar from photographer to photographer….the quality undoubtedly varies also.
Some couples need an insight into what’s involved in shooting a wedding, and are usually very reasonable to deal with when they understand same.

I have on occasion told couples that they may be better off employing someone else after I’m informed that “Uncle Bob” has a good camera and they’re contemplating using him.

I like the cooking analogy! People also think that food comes free. As a Chef I used to get p****d off hearing ” Give us a big steak!” Do these dopes walk into a bar and say “Give us a big pint”? No, of course they don’t. Set your prices and stick to them. I think, if anything, the prices quoted are too low. An album could cost 250 before you put any photos in it. And you’re also giving Hi-Res images on disc.

Your pricing seems reasonable to me, possibly even very reasonable, considering all the elements, namely your time, the time of a second shooter/ assistant (your husband), cost of equipment, etc. Of course, what we don’t know is the quality of your imagery, what stage you’re at in your wedding shooting career, if you need to offer discounted shoots to get established, etc. The provision of high res photos on a cd is a nice touch, both in adding value, and also obviating your need to keep images on hand if your clients ever want reprints, etc.

I have done a few wedings for friends and family, some of who had received ‘professional’ quotations, which were not to their liking (polite way of saying ‘outlandish’ me’s thinks)

I charged €500 for the first one and that included 30 10×8 prints and they sourced their own album. The 4 or 5 after that I charged between 700 and 900 (depending on how well I knew them… and did my cousin’s for free..!)

However, unlike ‘packages’ from many pro’s I generally cover the whole day as part of what I cover. That includes being at the barber shop at 9am to catch the boys having their cut throat shaves, off to the brides house to cover pretty much EVERYTHING, off to the pub maybe to have the lads and the groom’s last pint of freedom, back to house for bride leaving and then I’m at the church before she arrives. Catch some casual shots of groom, groomesmen etc, bride arriving, ceremony, etc, etc. I then cover the meal, the speeches, cutting of the cake, forst dance and a lot of random, candid shots around the reception. Why so much…? Because I think if one is contracted to shoot a wedding, one should try capture the whole thing.

Last one I did I took over 1300 shots. The bride and groom have stil to select their album shots. when they do make that selection, I’l also do any retouching thay may be required…. and all under the original quotation. And like first wedding – they source their own album.
