Contact the editors. Usually their contact email and/or phone number is listed in the paper or website.

Many will only take images with a prior agreement and won’t just take random submissions.

Contact them in advance, and you’ll know where you stand.

thanks for that Paul,i’ll take your advice and contact them first as have tried sending shots to their email which I got from the irish media Contact book but to no avail, also my email server eircom won’t let me send anything bigger than 3.9m which is a pain

In general, any images I submit to the papers, the file size is between 1mb and 1.5mb. They don’t need anything larger, and if they do, they can come back and specifically request it.

paul thanks again really appreciate the advice,so you reckon best to ring the editor and say what you have to see if they’re interested etc and take it from there?
Someone mentioned to me today that you have to send shots into the papers FTP site??

Exactly. Phone and take it from there.

For those who submit to papers frequently, most papers have an ftp site, and they will set you up with login details. But, people don’t just give out those details.

Talk to the editors and they will clarify everything for you.

    Hi Jon / Everybody,
The Irish Examiner welcomes pictures from readers – News / Sports & Any great shots! Firstly, we have a Readers Pictures slot on Saturday morning which uses the best one or two pictures submitted that week. The pictures can be of anything / anybody and just need to be visually attractive and if it brings a smile to readers faces that is a big bonus.
These pictures can be uploaded here: http://photos.examiner.ie/readers_pictures.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; by using our dedicated picture upload web form. Each Friday all “vetted” pictures are uploaded here: http://photos.examiner.ie/?Action=_VC&id=8646210&ppwd=85623mgp” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; for everybody to enjoy and the “Winners” whose images are published on the Saturday paper get a Photographic A3 print of the page of the paper containing their picture. No payment are made for publishing these pictures.
The Second option, which is what Jon is asking about (I presume) is how to submit “Live” News / Sports pictures. We welcome pictures from anybody, Amateur or Professional, but pictures must be sent on the day they are taken (no good having a great news picture three days late!).
    What the Irish Examiner likes:
Interesting / Newsworthy Clean, Sharp pictures.
    JPEG (.Jpg) only.
    No Folders or Zip files
Every Picture MUST have a full caption that tells the reader about the photograph (Who, What, Where, When & Why) Ideally in File Info in Photoshop / IPTC Caption / Description field.
eg. 06/10/2011. RTE’s John Murray interviews Mary O’Rourke about the Presidential election candidates following a Junior Chamber Business breakfast in Athlone. Picture: Joe Soap
Images should be 5 -20Mb when open, but only about 1Mb when saved as a JPEG file. Save at Medium quality setting (5-6).
e-mail your captioned images to: picturedeskexaminer.ie with your contact details.
If you cannot caption the image in File Info, don’t despair, just use the Reader upload link above and send us a quick e-mail to; picturedeskexaminer.ie to tell us you have uploaded a possible news picture.
Payment at the Examiner’s rates will be made for Published News / Sports pictures.
