A fence to be proud of ??

Lovely lighting and an impressive landscape, what the picture lacks is a sense of composition. A witty title is sometimes not enough to carry a photo.
ladyardilaunParticipantHI tex – thanks for taking the time to comment – Landscape photography is a new output for me so I shoot what appeals to me..I thought that the fence/whole outdoor scene was the composition so im a little confused…but sure tis a long learning curve ahead of me and this seems to be just the place to learn :-)
markclehaneParticipantI thought that the fence/whole outdoor scene was the composition so im a little confused…
Unfortunately as it stands, your image appears to be more of a snapshot than a “considered” landscape image. What you have is a scene with lots of elements fighting for attention… fenceposts, lake, mountains, sky, and in the end nothing actually stands out. I’m sure it was a lovely view when you were standing there but that doesn’t mean it’ll translate as an impressive photograph.
Hopefully the tips in the links below will shed more light on landscape composition for you.

Have fun learning
MarkladyardilaunParticipantMark, many thanks for taking the time to give me such an informed reply and indeed links – will have a look later on this pm and hopefully learn something – again thanks a mill :-)
sirvadMemberThis isnt a bad image for someone starting off at landscape photography. When i started off i took exactly the same kind of shots. ya walk along, see nice scenery, an auld fence and ya think….. heres an image. The eye is the best camera in the world. so when ya take your shot and bring it home, it doesnt look as good. All to do with composition. Light is another thing. this scene is screaming for evening/morning light. Leading lines- the fence in your shot leads you out of the frame and not into it, maybe move camera a little right.if it were mine id also clone out the distant buildings as they add nothing. keep tryin and learning. You will get there !
5faytheParticipantHi ladyardilaun,
You have received good feedback from our fellow members and it is a good example
of the value of this site to any member who is receptive to such advice.Your image shows a beautiful scene and it must have been very pleasant to be there.
As has been said it is not a bad photograph and it shows all the elements that make it
such a lovely place.
How you arrange those elements in your frame is what determines whether you make a successful image. It is not simple but well worth working on.
You can learn how light shines on your chosen scene at different times of the day and year.
Then which of these times light the scene best in photographic terms. You can frame the scene from different locations to determine which viewpoint gives the best
composition keeping in mind the suggestions that were made above. Then even though you have the best possible composition and are there when the light
should be best you may have to have patience and wait.
For example there may be cloud cover or the clouds might be in the wrong place.
You may even have to go away and come back another time. For example, in your image the large cloud is positioned in the LHS of the frame.
Might it have been better if a cloud like this was positioned where the clear blue sky is now?
If so you would have to wait and hope that the clouds would co-operate. :)
Nature dosen’t always. All the best and I look forward to seeing more of your images.
Cheers,
John.
jodal1975Participanti’ve nothing to add here really , everything that needs to said already has….i’m slowly learning that what looks good to the eye does not necessarily translate into a good photograph…..there in lies the art of composition.
